Menopause the Musical is by far the funniest off Broadway play I've ever seen if you're in "that" generation. Also I've heard from several friends that Blue Man Group is fantastic, however I've not seen it myself.

Since you have said "really good play" and "off-broadway" I get the impression you aren't thinking light musicals like those mentioned above. I'm heading to New York for a month and had planned to get my fill of really good Off-Broadway stuff, but surprisingly little seems to be offered right now which grabs me. But I did just order tickets for the new The Retreat from Moscow with Eileen Atkins, John Lithgow, and Ben Chaplin, which I hope will be an exciting play. It begins performances October 2 -- too late for you??? Playbill.com was doing a special for preview tickets, not sure if they still have those. By the way, this is a Broadway production at the Booth, not off-Broadway.
"Trumbo, Red, White, and Blacklisted" sounds intresting. It stars Nathan Lane in a rare, rather dramatic appearance until mid-September and then a rotating cast of other leads.
