Will be in Bar Harbor and Kennebunkport in a couple of weeks. I'm looking for some REALLY good seafood, but not a "touristy" type place. It doesn't have to be fancy--simple is GOOD. I have visions of lobster, cold beer and sitting outside.(I'm from Texas and we don't get to sit outside and eat too often--too hot!) Any ideas?

If you want simple, sit at a picnic table on a deck, I think you would be better off stopping in the Damariscotta area, take the road on the north side of the peninsula on your way to Pemaquid Point. There are a couple of places where the lobsters are cooked fresh off the boat and the menu consists of not much else. (Warning here in case someone with you doesn't want lobster.) There is a much larger place closer to Pemiquid that has an extensive seafood menu plus indoor seating that has become very popular so might be what you would consider touristy. What you do is watch for a little sign along the way pointing down a side road to a lobster pound. Last year we found a place near Rockport that only had about 6 tables, all outside. The lobster was great. It was just a little cook shack. As you drive the road to Pemaquid Point, if you're on the right road you'll pass a house where fresh baked goods are sold in a little booth by the road. Payment is on the honor system. Everything is wonderful. Bring along some plastic forks etc, buy a blueberry pie and have it with your lobster.
The Jordan Pond House is our favorite for atmosphere and great food. It is a bit more expensive but worth it. Start your visit with a stop at the viistor's center at the park and then head for the short walking tour at the summit of Cadillac Mt. Get advice about some walks or ranger trips that meet your abilities and take some walks. Ten feet off the trail and you have the place to yourself!
Sounds like you are looking for what is called in Maine a "Lobster Pound". Usually a few picnic tables, you choose your lobster, then they cook it for you along with corn, clams, potatoes, etc. Our favorite is the Trenton Bridge LP just before the causeway to Mount Desert Island. Jordan Pond House is a good splurge for tea. There are acually a number of good restaurants in Bar Harbor. Enjoy one of my favorite places!
Noonan's in Kennebunkport for lobster in the rough
Another vote for Nunan/Noonan's--it's actually in Cape Porpose, I think; they don't take reservations and there is often a line, but it's worth the wait.
Sorry, don't like Nunan's at all!
But I'd vote for Mabels in Kennebunkport! Not fancy, best seafood, but you do need a reservation -you can sit on the porch. You can sit on the water at the Arundel Wharf Restaurant in K-port. Also, the Lobster Pound on Rt. 1 Wells/Ogunquit line or the the OarWeed at the end of the Marginal Way in Perkins Cove, Ogunquit. (Best atmosphere: Arundel or Oarweed. Best Food: Mabels) Hope you get to realize your image exactly!
Ooops. Didn't mean to imply that the Rt. 1 Lobster Pound is on the water. It is not. It is in a wooded grove off of a parking lot disguised as a through-way!
Thanks, everyone for your suggestions!
For Kennebunkport our favorite is 'Mabels Lobster Claw' for Seafood. It is George Bush's favorite Kennebunkport restaurant and he is a fellow Texan! For traditional New England dining we like having dinner at the hotel where we stay, 'The Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport.'
