Venice is very small, so everything is near your hotel. I can't give you any specific examples but, in terms of food, stay away from the train station to keep the prices and grossness factor down (those restaurants often cater to tourists and are a little like fast food sometimes). Speaking of fast food, they have a McDonalds there and it (like all the McDs in Italy) have curry sauce for the McNuggets. If you're ever tempted - cheap is cheap in any country - YUM.
All the shops are interesting. I am absolutely not kidding when I say that. At the same time, many of the shops are the same but with different prices. Try and find things you like and then compare prices at several different places before you decide. Also, while you're there, take a tour of Murano island. They do glass (dishes, art, jewelery, you name it) and it's amazing.
