Good, but cheap, accomodations on the BI & Kauai

We are planning a 50th wedding anniversary trip Sept. 10-27, but need to economize on the lodging by spending under $100 a night. We want clean and quiet rooms and would like B & B suggestions as well as other places. We'll divide our time between the two islands, spending at least 2 days at the volcano. (We are flying into Hilo from Illinois.) Thanks!

Big Island Kona side: Outrigger Kenanhou (Spelling definately wrong) was right at a great snorkeling site and you might be able to get it for that price. For the price I thought it was great. Its on a main road, but set back a bit, but certainly you are not in a residential area if that is what you are looking for.

That's a low budget. You can get some B&B "rooms" by looking at vrbo.com. You will need a rental car.

Also try looking at www.alternativehawaii.com for more budget conscious ideas.

Jeanie, congratulations on the anniversary. Trip to Hawai'i will be a great way to celebrate! Sept. is low season, so that should help w/ budget.

I would talk to a travel agent. Blue Sky is a consolidator that has a good choice of hotels and can work with flexible schedules. You might have more of a range of hotels to choose from that way. You can get a list of local agents who work with them, and see the hotels they offer and prices, on their website blueskytours.com. If you haven't already bought your air tickets, you could do a whole air-hotel-car package thru them. I've been surprised at the good airfare they can get. I think you could do just the hotels through them also.

As far as booking hotel yourself...On Kaua'i you might consider the Kaua'i Sands in Kapa'a where you can get a room for $95. It is on a pretty (but not swimmable) beach and next to Coconut Marketplace. That is a good central location for exploring the whole island. kauaisandshotel.com On the southern side (and inland, not near the water) is Kalaheo Inn where you can get a room for $79 kalaheoinn.com We stayed there several years ago, also in Sept., and were very happy with it. There's no a/c but we did not miss it. Kalaheo is a good location for doing things in Po'ipu, and Waimea Canyon/Koke'e Park/Kalalau lookout, etc.

On the Big Island, you might be interested in Kona Magic Sands konahawaii.com/ms.htm Rates are $105/day or $695/week, plus cleaning fee. I believe most of the units there are individually owned, so they do show up on vrbo and the like too.

I agree with Ag3046 that Vrbo.com and alternative Hawai'i are good resources for all the islands. tmt, I think the correct spelling is Keauhou (had to look it up).

Jeannie, I look forward to hearing more about your trip plans

We stayed in a condo just across the street from Outrigger Keauhou for just under $100/night. Staying in a condo is economical not only because it can be less expensive, but also because you can have some meals at "home" instead of eating out all the time. VRBO is a great resource, but with a quick google will find you even more.

You're lucky to be able to take such a long trip. I can see why you want to save money on accommodations, though. There's a decent selection of lodging on the Big Island for $100 a night. Just stay out of the touristy area, i.e. Kailua. And stay away from the hotels in Hilo. They may be cheap, but not clean. Stay in a B&B instead.

This is a B&B listing in all price ranges:

And some low price motels/B&Bs starting at the North end of the Big Island, and going clockwise:

My husband and I stayed at Middle Ke'ei Studio for week last winter. Clean, quiet, nice location 10 minutes from Kealakakua Bay. http://www.konaweb.com/middle_keei/ It's very inexpensive.

I just want to say "thanks!" to all of you who took the time to write us. I'm checking these out and am sure we'll find one that will be suitable. I'll keep checking this site for awhile in case any more come to mind. (Has anyone stayed at the Old Hawaiian B & B or the Ala Kai B & B (Hilo)?) Again, thanks! Jean

For Kauai take a look at Suite Paradise, if you book online via their site the rates are good:
http://www.suite-paradise.com/

We stayed at Poipu Kai via them, worked out well and great value for money - we paid about $900/7nts incl tax for an enormous 2/2, I bet smaller units will be cheaper.

Also check out Hawaiian Airlines website. They offer good deals on hotels as well. I used www.tripadvisor.com to check out prospective hotels before booking.

A great and inexpensive place to stay on Kauai is the Green Acres Cottages. We stayed in the Nautical Nights room at $90 per night. The other cottages are $75 per night and would be fine for a couple. I was with my daughter and we needed two sleeping areas and wanted the cooking facilities.

The breakfast was packaged muffins, coffee, tea, and juice. You can also pick all of the fruit that you want from the orchard.

The website is www.greenacrescottages.com
You will need a car on Kauai.

On the BI, we stayed at the Inn at Kulaniapia Falls - the room was pretty basic, but they have their own waterfall on the property that made it worth it. In Volcano, we stayed at the Kilauea Lodge and loved it. The prices there were slightly higher than that, but it's really convenient for going to the National Park, and they have a great restaurant onsite - might be worth a one night splurge. We stayed in a cute cottage there that had a cozy fireplace - really nice.

In Kauai's Kapaa, east side, we stayed at the Aston Islander on the Beach, which was newly remodeled two years ago, and was moderately priced. Granite counters, new furniture, walking distance to the Coconut Marketplace, which has shops and restaurants and central to the north and south sides of the island. It was a much cheaper lodging than where we stayed in the Big Island, the Hilton Waikoloa, but we were happy there. The Waikoloa was nice, but we had to take a tram/boat from our room to the lobby because it was so huge. At the Aston Islander, you walk out of your door and your car is there in a matter of steps.

In Kona we love the Kona Tiki www.konatiki.com
It is charming, clean, literally hanging over the crashing waves and a very friendly place. They have fridges and some have kitchenettes, continental breakfast inc.We just tried to book for the New years holiday last night and when we found they were booked we decided on Kauai instead. we like it that much. We have also stayed an Manago. very rustic, maybe not anniversary type place (the restuarant is awesome-very old Hawaii)
