Hello,
We will be traveling to Athens this Saturday Feb 7th to attend a high school swim meet. We would like to know if anyone can recommend a good place to get a burger and a milkshake. We want to avoid fast food chains, we like to try out local places. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Good burger place in or near Athens

Well, a Georgia institution is the Varsity - and there's a location in Athens.

Visit The Grill, 171 College Ave., virtually across from the arches (which are located at head of north campus on Broad St. Two minutes drive from the natatorium). Handmade shakes and burgers that look like those you make at home. If you're hungry try the Big Molly-1/2 pound of meat.
Hope you (or yours) enjoy swimming in the Gabrielsen Natatorium. It's a world class facility for the best swim program in the country, run by the best women's coach, Jack Baurerle, who coached our team at the Bejing Olympics.
Think the OP means Athens, Ohio.
oh
oops!
Yes, I meant Athens , Ohio. Thank You!
You might get better replies if you put Athens, Ohio in your title. Many of us Southerners automatically think of Athens, Georgia (or Athens, Greece
.
I knew you meant Athens, Ohio, what the heck is in Athens Ga. anyway ?! Of course I grew up about 25 minutes from there...The Pub right on Court St. would be my suggestion. A bar to be sure, but also a bit of a locals hangout & one of the nicer bars (as college bars go).
So how was your trip to Athens (OHIO)...?
Although it is about 45 minutes away, the Harmar tavern in Marietta is a great place for a burger. Old bar with all types of people there. They also have a famous fried bologna sandwich and the nachos are the best in town. Ask anyone in Marietta where it is - while in Mtta be sure and visit downtown especially Front, Second and Putnam Streets - a number of antique stores, specialty shops and a very nice cooperative artist gallery - no I do not work for the Convention and Visitor Board.
Should have read your message - the weekend is past - sorry
