I live in Martinez in central Contra Costa County, California, about 35 miles east of San Francisco. I am finding more friends who are discovering that they are gluten intolerant. I am finding restaurants just by chance which do have gluten-free items on their menus. It would be helpful to know in advance which restaurants (from the best to fast food) have gluten-free items.

http://www.glutenfreerestaurants.org should be helpful. You can also check on yelp.com for gluten free locations.
That website http://www.glutenfreerestaurants.org is a joke.
I checked for GF restaurants in my town and it came up with two. Outback Steakhouse and Carrabas. Mind you there about 30 restaurants in town here, and I know from first hand experience that that just about every one of them has GF items on the menu, and most have GF clearly marked.
Yelp was much more helpful as it appears to be user reported info.
I have friends who have discovered a new life after going gluten free.
Is it genetic?
