Glacier, Yellowstone, Teton - Car Rental?
We are planning a two week trip to Glacier, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons this summer. We are flying into Calgary and need a one way car rental so that we can see the parks and fly out of Salt Lake City. Has anyone rented a car in Canada and returned it in the US? If this is not allowed, how else can we travel? I have already booked planes and hotels - so I'm a bit concerned because Avis just told me that one way rentals from Canada to the US are not allowed!!!??!

When doing my original research, I saw that many people had flown in to Calgary to visit Glacier and thought that was a reasonable plan. Now, after reading more, it seems problematic. It wasn't clear that they had flown there round trip. I am now thinking that we should rent a car in Calgary, drive into the US to get our US rental and drive both cars back to Canada so we can drop off the Canadian car - and then use the American one. As complicated as this sounds it may be cheaper than cancelling my flights - or trying to add a flight from Calgary to Montana which looks like it would cost a fortune. Wish this was clearer when I made our itinerary!

Don't know why people insist on flying into Calgary. Kalispell Montana, which is only 35 miles from the west entrance, has non stop seasonal flights from Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Chicago and Denver.
Sounds like plan 2 should work for you. Be sure you have passports and ask th car rental if it's possible to cross the border with a rental.
Happy trails.

One way out of the way route would be to fly to Calgary and take a Brewster bus to Jasper http://www.brewster.ca/transportatio...FUaRfgodj_sM5Q
and then take the ViaRail Canadian (3 days/week) from Jasper to Vancouver.
Take the Amtrak train or bus to Seattle. Either rent a car in Seattle or take the Empire Builder to Whitefish and rent a car there.
You can drop an US based rental car at SLC if you must but still plan on a drop off fee.
The Empire Builder leaves Seattle King St. station after 4PM every day and arrives in Whitefish before 8AM Mountain time.
