I suddenly realized my family and I will be going to Glacier Park for a few days this summer; no in-park lodging is available for our dates. We'll be there for 3-4 nights (not yet exactly determined), flying out of Missoula 10AM the last morning. Any recommendations for lodging near the park for a family of 4 (kids 8, 13)? Or are there places in-park that aren't managed by "glacierparkinc.com"? We'll have a car and want to drive the Going to the Sun Road at least once, enjoying some short hikes while we're there. I'm sure I can keep us amused once there, so my question is mainly about lodging options, but other advice is certainly welcome.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give -- I checked out the forum archives but didn't find anything specific (sorry if I missed it).
Glacier Park, non-park lodging?

One in-park lodge (actually a collection of cabins on Lake Mcdonald) is managed by a different company. Here is the link:
http://www.westglacier.com/apgar_village_lodge.php
There are also a number of cabins and resorts just outside the park entrance at West Glacier, and motels and other lodging available at St. Mary (the east end of Going to the Sun Road) and East Glacier.
You can also find nearby lodging on this website:
http://www.nationalparkreservations.com/glacier.htm
But I would book directly with each property, not that website.
There are lots of choices depending on your dates, rates, and distance from the park. Try this web site

Whoops, try,

Thanks to each of you for your quick and useful replies! I now have a reservation at a motel in Whitefish, and if I find something better available, I can change it up to the day before. But at least we won't be sleeping in the car. I'll post a brief trip report when I return -- but if anyone has any further suggestions, please keep them coming -- they could prove useful to others perusing this thread in the future.
Another option is Kalispell, MT which is about 10 minutes further from West Glacier. We got a good AAA rate at the Hampton Inn which had an indoor pool and spa, free business center/use of Internet, tasty free breakfast and very nice rooms and common areas. There are, of course, many other hotel choices in Kalispell as well.
A suggestion for families/groups--We found 2 vacation homes near the park (West Glacier and East Glacier) that were a great deal through VRBO. They were both very nice homes and cost us much less than the two "value" rooms we got one night at Many Glacier Lodge. Generally, these are booked out weeks/months in advance during the high season, but sometimes there are last minute vacancies.
Am I reading you wrong??? Kalispell is definetly a good 45 minutes from West Glacier.
