Two 30ish girlfriends are looking for someplace pretty to go for a couple of days in the week between Xmas and New Years. Skiing not necessary, spa would be nice. Oh, and we don't want to spend a lot of money. How realistic is this? Any advice?

I was looking at similar types of trips in December, so I can share some of my research. I can't offer personal recommendations. And none of these places are what I'd call cheap, but I'm not sure what you mean by "don't want to spend a lot of money".
Church Landing in Meredith NH looks really nice

The Inn at Weatherfield in Vermont looked good to me, not sure it has spa facilities

The Woodstock Inn does have a spa, but I think it was pricier

The Manor on Golden Pond looked nice too

If these are too pricey, please post a budget range, and I might think of something else.

Where are you coming from? Are you flying in? Or driving? Are you OK with driving in snow?
If you don't need a fancy "destination" vacation you could just base in Brattleboro (at the southweest corner of the state) and poke around from there. VT is gorgeous.

You will probably have the best luck finding things to do in NH if you stay in one of the cities like Concord, Portsmouth or Manchester. The free weekly newspaper Hippo Press has great coverage for activities in these areas. Concord has Red River Theater (independent movie theater), Manchester and Portsmouth have better restaurants. Concord and Portsmouth have best downtown areas but small. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a day spa. You could visit some galleries. Bead It, a shop on North Main St in Concord lets you choose beads then sit down and make your own jewelry. You could explore a used bookstore in Henniker (Book Depot), go skiing at Pat's Peak. Visit some ethnic restaurants in Manchester. Might be some free wine or beer tastings. Kind of depends on what interests you have.

This place looks nice to me and near Mass Moca and the Clark Institute if you like art. http://www.harbourhouseinn.com/ They have 1 room with 2 twin beds (not easy to find). Don't know if you consider $170/night as not too expensive.

The four-star Stage Neck Inn in southern Maine has a "midweek" package, $125 per PERSON, per night gets you the room, breakfast, and a 4-course dinner each night. The setting can be spectacular, but keep a close eye on the weather forecast before booking.
