Giant dust storm swallows Phoenix
Wow, that was an incredible dust storm ... 5,000 ft high wall (literally) of dust, up to 50 miles wide, winds to 60 mph. Airport shut down for an hour, trees toppled, dust covering everything. Our swimming pool looks like a peat bog this morning.

This is why resort rooms that go for $400 in March are on sale for $99 in the Phoenix summer. Come on down!

Check out this video of someone driving directly into the sand storm. Pitch black inside.

I always call them a 'Liz Haboob' - named after a similarly named news reporter who had a stormy career in Phoenix.
I don't remember seeing dust storms like this when I was a kid, but I imagine it was just because there weren't cameras everywhere to record them.

Good one! I remember her and a Google search shows she's now working for a station in LA under the nom de guerre Liz Habib.

Seems like we get 3-5 of these each monsoon season now, though this one is apparently the worst for dust in some time. So much mud fell from the sky that after 24 hours and 3 backwashes I can now barely begin to see the bottom of my pool.

Another moderately big haboob last night (July 18th), almost two weeks after the Mother of all Dust Storms ... only 3,000 ft high, winds of 25-30 mph and, best of all, only a fraction of dirt in the pool from this storm compared to the big mother two weeks ago.
