Getting to Lahaina Ferry from Airport
While in Maui, we will be renting a car. When we leave Maui, we will be spending a couple of nights in Lanai. We would like to take the ferry from Lahaina to Lanai. I assume we will still have to drop the car off at the airport where we picked it up. How long of a ride is it from Kahului Airport to Lahaina and how much would a taxi ride cost?

SueDoc - We did the same thing several years ago but were able to drop our car off in Lahaina. I'm pretty sure we rented thru Alamo. There may be other companies that have drop off locations in Lahaina. As the drive from the airport to Lahaina is about 40 minutes or so, I'm sure a taxi would be pretty expensive.

Alamo has a location at the Kapalua West Maui Airport (airport code is JHM), about 10 minutes from Lahaina where you can drop off your car. Alamo's telephone # there is 808-661-7181.
I'm sure other car rental companies have them in the area as well, but better check.
On your arrival in Maui, if you rent the car at Kahului airport (OGG) and then drop it off at Kapalua (JHM) at the end of your stay, there'll be a $35 drop charge, no matter what company you use. That's a LOT cheaper than taking a cab from OGG to Lahaina. The rental car company will then take you and your luggage to the Lahaina Pier, where you'll catch Maui Expeditions ferry to Lanai. Please remember that you'll need reservations in advance for the ferry.

National has an office just a couple of miles north of Kaanapali. Hertz has a desk in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency. Last month I dropped our Hertz car off there and they waived the $50 drop charge. They didn't even charge me for the little bit of gas I used. They also have a shuttle that will take you to the Lahaina pier. We were also going to Lanai and wanted to avoid returning the car at the airport. A taxi from the airport to Lahaina would run $45-$50 with tip.
