We are travelling to the US in September and are tossing around the idea of staying in San Diego for a few days. My husband has a wheelchair and we wouldn't be hiring a car. Is it fairly easy to get around using public transport? Also I would love some ideas on best area's to stay (either one of the beach areas or Gaslamp? We want to visit Old Town so would probably need to stay somewhere within walking distance to a train or whatever accessible transport could get us there. Also travelling with our 7yr old son.

Old Town area would be a good choice to stay - as the trolley is nearby and I believe is wheelchair accessable. Check out the trolley lines (would copy the page but on a laptop) - but they really don't go to the beach area. For that - you would probably have to spring for a taxi.
Just checked and there are free wheelchairs available for use at the main beaches in San Diego. Just google away.
And the Trolley is definitely wheelchair accessible - and think the bus line is too?
i might consider staying in the downtown district. the hop on/hop off trolly bus stops there too. i'm just thinking that old town doesn't have as big an area to walk around. downtown is pretty flat and you could easily walk along the habour. i bet the ferry to coronado is wheelchair accessible too. having a father in a wheelchair, just thinking which area might be easier for him to get around or you to push him. but downtown will be more expensive then old down.
