Any suggestions as to how to get a rental car NOT located at DTW? It's a lot cheaper if off-site but how to get to those places - taxi?
Is it worth it?
Would like to hear from experienced travelers who do this. Thanks in advance for your replies.

I'm not an experienced traveler who has done this, but have a few questions that may make it easier to advise you:
* How long will you need the car for?
* Where are you going from DTW?
* How much cheaper is "a lot", and which locations were you searching under to get the cheaper prices?
Lenght of trip is just under 3 wks (Sept 19-Oct9). We're visiting family in the area-St Clair Shores/Taylor/Toledo and are going RT to Tennessee to visit a friend.
Picking up a car at DTW = approx $601(midsize @Enterprise) vs $536 at Livonia (Budget midsize)...not sure if its worth the hassle. I search the usual sites such as Orbitz,Expedia, etc as well as the rental car sites
Unfortunately by the time you hire a metro car or a taxi to take you to Livonia (for instance) you will have easily paid the $60 difference in price. The city of Taylor is fairly close to the airport so maybe you could arrange for one of your family members to pick you up and take you to a car rental location in there. Unfortunately your options are pretty limited given that the motor city has limited resources when it comes to public transportation.
Given all that, I'd agree with CDJD. If you can have family pick you up, then why not see if you can find a rental closer to them to save a few $$. But if not, I seriously doubt you could get transportation to anyplace that would save you money for less than what you'd save, if you're talking roughly $60 in savings. Detroit metro area is really, really bad about public transportation.
