Gennaro's Restaurant-UWS

Has anyone been to Gennaro's Restaurant on the Upper West Side? This was recommended to me but I know nothing about it. Any info appreciated!

Yep - As UWS cuisine goes, it's not a bad choice. Reasonable prices, good pasta. The service I've had there has been hot and cold but nothing to keep me from going back. If I wanted a nice Italian dinner on the upper west side, Gennaro is probably where I would go. Is it a special occassion - do you need a suggestion for a particular type of place?

I've not been but the Zagat guide says the foods great, it's reasonably priced, decor basic. Long lines

Very popular, always crowded. They don't take credit cards. The last time I ate at the restaurant there was a $20 minimum.

Nice food - a little better than the average neighborhood place - reasonable prices - uneven service - and long lines - unless you want to eat dinner at 6 in the afternoon.

We use for delivery only - since we don;t like the lines.

Thanks to all for the comments. My husband and I are getting away from the kids for a few days and are staying at the Excelsior. So, it's not really a special occasion but I did need a restaurant by the hotel. Sarabeth's was also recommended to me for lunch.

You're being given good advice but these two places are so popular there are often lines to get in. Sarabeth's is one of the most popular brunch places in the city and will have lines around the block at peak hours. Isabella's on Columbus & 77th is another popular place for brunch, lunch or dinner too. Barney Greengrass on Amsterdam & 86th is FAMOUS for the best smoked fish in the city. Cafe Lalo on 83 off Amsterdam is great for coffee & pastry and was featured in the movie "You've Got Mail" (maybe rent the movie-that's the neighborhood)

Kitchen 82 at Columbus & 82 is very good and very reasonable. Cesca (Italian), Ouest (American) and Aix (French) are maybe the best food in the neighborhood. Check menupages.com for menus and more reviews.

Another not bad Italian choice is Bella Luna - on Columbus around 88th. Pleasant food and good service at very modest prices.

Gennaro is great -- tremendous food for the money -- which is why it's often crowded.

Don't miss Gennaro!

Gennaro's is good, but if the line is long, I'm not sure it's worth the wait. Right near your hotel there's plenty of wonderful restaurants. If you want Italian, there's Cesca which is one of the finest in the city. Ocean Grill is a wonderful place for seafood. I love Jean-Luc on 84th and Columbus. And Nice Matan on 79th and Amsterdam is very good. These are all fairly upscale places that are good choices to look nice and have an adults' night out, but none of them are outrageously priced (for New York, anyway!).
