From Newark airport to Montvale I would not take the GSP the whole way.

I'd take NJ Turnpike north to I-80W to Rt 17N, then pick up the GSP in Paramus.

But agreed, for both the GSP and NJ Turnpike an EZ pass is the way to go. The days of needing to slow down every 10miles or so to chuck coins is a thing of the past.

Beware of using the pass in the rental car though. Many rental car agencies tack on a $1-2 per day of rental fee. That's not a $1-2 per day that us actually use the EZ pass, but a fee for each and every day of the rental.

The toll booths are fewer but more expensive than back in the day, so you stop less but pay more. EZ Pass is a great idea if you drive often on roads where you would use it. You can get one free from the New York EZ Pass center, even if you live in another state. Maybe Jersey, too, though some states seem to charge deposit or usage fees, e.g., Virginia.

If you don't live in a state that uses EZ Pass or its clones, a roll of quarters and a roll of dollars will do.

While the suggestions to get EZ Pass might be worthwhile if you would get use from it wherever you live, I'm not sure it makes sense to get it just for one trip.

In addition to the application process for setting up the account and supplying a credit card, it takes time to receive your transponder (I did it by mail) and then you are automatically charged $1/month on the account on a going forward basis until you cancel the account, whether or not you actually go through any tolls.

The toll booths on the GSP collect the following:

ramp exit $.50
Two-way toll barriers $.75
One-way toll barriers $1.50

You will encounter tolls at mile marker 142.7- Northbound only

Mile Marker 150.7 Southbound only.

Mile Marker 160.5 Northbound only.

Mile Marker 166.1 Southbound only.

Thanks, everybody - I'm from Colorado and leave on Wednesday so the EZ Pass won't really do it - but thanks SusieQQ for the specific info - I'm feeling better that I'm not spending the world on tolls.....but since when did the GW Bridge get to be 12 bucks! Geez!

You get EZ Pass with the rental car (you rent it for the duration of your trip), not by setting up a new EZ Pass account. And it is, in my opinion, worth it for the convenience as long as you can get it for a reasonable per-day fee ($3 or so). When I was renting cars, I always rented an EZ Pass to go along with the car rental because there are a few places where you just can't pay in cash or when it would really slow you down to do so. (And you get a pretty good discount ... so if you are taking the GWB, that pays for one day's rental in itself.)

It's not just the cost savings - it's that you can usually just drive through the EX pass lanes - when you may have a wait (I've seen 20 to 25 cars) to get through the few remaining cash lanes.
