googling the topic I learn that as a senior I can do the above trip using Sond Transit and Everett transit for just $3 plus the ticket at the Boeing factory of $15 or so as against $62 charged by the various tours, a huge saving. Can anyone who has actually done the trip tell me how arduous it is and whether it is worthwhile to save $40 abouts.

To give you an idea, Everett is 30 miles away from Seattle. I don't know how long it would take to travel 30 miles on public transportation, changing buses, etc. But I'm guessing it will take hours and be a real hassle.
Amtrak has a train that arrives in downtown Everett before 9AM.
The train goes past Boeing on the way from Seattle to Everett.
The fare is $18. http://www.futureofflight.org/
You could also get over to Whidbey Island.
It's certainly doable; take Sound Transit no 511 to the Ash Way Park and Ride in Lynnwood, then the Community Transit (Everett) no. 113 to 84th and SR 525, then walk half a mile or so east to the FoF center. I'm not sure if there's a sidewalk the whole way on 84th and it's a very trafficky area, so be careful.
I'd allow two hours in each direction, so it sort of comes down to a question of how you value your time. One thing the tours give is a confirmed time for the plant tour; as a walk-up you'd have to wait for an opening.
Thanks for your time and helpfulness. I am looking for someone who has done the trip on a public transport.
I have never done the tour but I live in Seattle and have driven up to that area many times. It's quite a distance. I think it would be worth it to pay for the tour.
Maybe someone will see this post and answer, but doing it by public transportation is not something I've ever seen recommended. But if you want to try, just follow Gardyloo's instructions above.
