I live here in Pompano. There's always lots of stuff to do. For starters: Butterfly World, on Sample Rd. More butterlies than you'll ever again see in your lifetime. Near there is the Festival Flea Market, first quality merchandise sold relatively cheap because there's very little overhead. Merchants just have stalls in an enormous pole barn type building. The beach of course. You can rent poles and fish off the pier in Pompano just off A1A. Las Olas Blvd in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. Very boutique, classy shopping and window shopping. Take a day trip down to South Beach in Miami and see how the beautiful people live--and party. Go to Hollywood and walk the 2 and a half mile broadwalk along the beach for some fabulous people watching and tremendous variety of cheap restaurants. Drive up to Palm Beach and see how the really, really rich live. Shop on Worth Ave. and at City Place in Palm Beach.
Go to Broward Center and take in an art exhibit and/or a play or musical extravaganza depending upon what's on at the time you're here. Bet on a game of Jai-Alai at the fronton in Dania, or at the horse track or dog tracks around here at various places. Go shop at Sawgrass Mills, another of those outlet malls that claims to be the largest in the US--and this one might be. Take an airboat ride at Bille Swamp Safari. Walk around Bahia Mar and check out the incredible yachts moored there. Take a ride on the Jungle Queen steamboat type vessel or just the Water Bus that goes along the intracoastal waterway. Check out the Riverfront and Riverwalk areas of FLL. Go to the Swap Chop circus and farmer's market which is the largest indoor/outdoor flean market in So FL. Gamble at Hard Rock casino or on a Sea Escape or SunCruz. Call the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau at 954 765 4466 or go to their website at www.sunny.org to get all kinds of brochures and info about everything down here. Have a great time.

Julie,
I need you badly. Please, don't go...
I am staying at Palm Aire (my timeshare deal) so I believe it is a great place, at least it looks good on picture.

However I was told it is a horrific idea to stay at Pompano because it is hours to the ocean due to traffic. I keep calling the Resort and they keep telling me that it is NOT! that it is 20 min to the beach. I am confused and I was waiting for someone like you to talk to me. I appreciate this more than you know.
We are coming on March, 27 for 10 days.
So I am reading your post and it seems all I want to do is right there.

One more thing. My husband hates driving and we are not planning to rent a car. Is this easy to get to Ft.L and Miami and where-ever else by the bus or other public transportation?

Thanks

I think you have been given the answers before on other posts, but maybe you don't like what you hear. If anyone told you it is "hours to the ocean" they are lying, but it is not real close either.

My partner's parents used to own a condo at PalmAire and I have stayed there a number of times (before I moved to Florida myself). It is not "Pompano Beach" but inward from the ocean. If you can drive to the beach in 30 minutes in April, it will be a minor miracle. There is a ton of traffic and it is slow going.

I can't imagine staying at Palm Aire without a car. You can call a taxi, wait a half hour or longer to get one, then do the traffic. Anywhere you go, one trip will easily cost you more than a day's car rental. It just plain doesn't make sense to stay at Palm Aire without a car -- end of story -- no argument.

If you want to lounge by the pool and play golf, then stay at Palm Aire. You don't need to go anywhere else if that is your goal. I assume you have a kitchen and you can make a trip to a grocery and cook in. There is at least one mediocre restaurant at the resort -- I don't know if there are now more than that. If you want to get out and go to the beach, shop, go to a variety of restaurants, or any of the other usual tourist things, you will be stuck, unless you have a car and are willing to spend a lot of time coming and going.

You ask it it is easy to get to Ft. Lauderdale and Miami by public transportation. The answer is NO. Again, end of story, no argument. Believe it if you want, or don't believe it if you prefer.

Julie has given you great ideas. You say "it sounds like it is all right there". All what? And what do you mean "right there". Yes, it is all within an hour or less -- but you still have to get there.

Is any of this now clearer?

Patric,
what is the deal with you?
I did NOT like an answer so i shopped for another and I got it from July. Sems like you didn't like Julie's one.
How long ago where you there, may I ask?
So you are saying Pompano is a bad place to vacation and I do not know places that are so bad so people are paying over $200.00 per night to stay there. Your post sounds like you have a former girlfriend girlfriend who dumped you long time ago...

I just found Ft.L Activities on Expedia
like snorkling in glass buttom boat and 1 day Bahamas cruise and River dinner cruise for few hours.
Had anyone ever tried any of those, please? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Ziana, try real hard to open you brain and listen to what I'm saying.
Pompano is NOT a bad place to vacation. But you are not staying in what most people would call Pompano. You are staying way inland in an area that has no public transportation and is difficult to get to the beach and to other activities.

Now, can you possibly manage to understand that?????

All those things you mention are good. But this is my question, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET TO THEM?

Oh, and I do apologize to you for misunderstanding the question. I thought you wanted honest answers about the transportation and what the place you're staying is like. I thought when you asked about a car, you wanted the truth.

Here's the appropriate answer of what you really want to hear.

"PalmAire is a wonderful place, right in the heart of the activities. You can walk to the beach, a mere couple of minutes away. There are a variety of great restaurants on site, and more in the immediate neighborhood. If you are looking to enjoy other activities in the Ft. Lauderdale and Miami area, you are in luck and there is no reason to rent a car. There is a wonderful network of busses, which will stop at your door every ten minutes or so, and for just a few cents take you anywhere you want to go. Don't worry about bus schedules or their routes. Simply tell them where you want to go, and they will change their route to suit you. Have a great time."

Ziana, I agree with Julie and Patrick. Julie gave you some great ideas and Patrick is right about transportation. If you want to go to Miami or to Palm Beach, you MUST have a car. I don't see any other way. Pompano is a great place to visit because it is in the middle of everything. Miami is probably 45 mins south of Pompano and West Palm Beach is about the same distance north of it. You can also check out a 2 night cruise to the Bahamas in Fort Lauderdale for very cheap. Go to www.imperialmajesty.com. I hope that helps.

Yes, eurotrip, I appreciate the link.

Patrick,
you have seen I did not like your answer and I do NOT appreciate your restless effort to make me feel bad about going where I am going.
You only answering what you feel like, I asked more then twice why people paying to be in Pompano.
Plus! READ my post...where have I said ABOUT TRANSPORTATION.
I said "I am hoping to hear from people who just returned from Ft.L and have good stuff to share. Thanks"
Have you, Patrick 'just' returned from Pompano? Thanks I didn't think so...

Actually, Zaina I was in Pompano less than two weeks ago for our Fodorite meeting, and in fact we actually drove within blocks of PalmAire! The traffic, number of lights, and congestion has at least tripled since I actually stayed there.

I guess I really am confused. You say you didn't say or ask anything about transportation. Could you explain this statement from you above and what it WAS supposed to mean then? I thought that's what I was responding to, but you didn't want to hear. I'm sure my more recent answer about how easy the transportation is, is more to your liking.

"One more thing. My husband hates driving and we are not planning to rent a car. Is this easy to get to Ft.L and Miami and where-ever else by the bus or other public transportation?"

And once more, people ARE RIGHFULLY PAYING TO BE IN POMPANO. What does that have to do with you NOT staying in Pompano, but at Palm Aire? I really just don't get it that you don't seem to understand PalmAire is not really in "downtown" Pompano! What is it you don't understand about that fact?

PalmAire is a large complex about 6 miles inland from the beachfront on Atlantic Blvd in Pompano Beach. It has timeshares, rental apartments, condos, houses, and golf courses. It is right across the street from the big Wal-Mart. The timeshare has a nice pool area - we stayed there several years ago. You will need a car to do just about anything in the area. The public beach is straight east on Atlantic Blvd [which dead ends right at the public parking lot].

Ziana, a car is a necessity just about anywhere in South Florida. Public transportation is spread thin across the area and unless you are staying in Miami Beach or one of the main tourist areas, having a car is your best bet.

Julie's ideas were spot on and even though Patrick may have came across the wrong way, he's right as well.

For those who think I was a bit harsh, please realize that this is at least the third go around on this topic from Ziana. She keeps bringing it up, people keep telling her the same things, she ignores it, and asks it all over again. Originally it was as a question about whether IF she booked there it would be easy to get around by public transportation. Everyone told her NO, but she booked anyway and still wants us all to say it will be easy. As you will note, she still seems convinced not to have a car, even if she doesn't seem to realize she DID bring that up once again.

Patrick,
I am actually very thrilled that you remember my year old first post.
This was my second one, please, do not excadurate.
Yes, I am going to PalmAire and I wanted to ask others less negative people but I just had to run into YOU again!
This post DID NOT have anything about my husband hates to drive. This one DIFFERENT, Patrick and please, if you advising others on the same manner - please, reconsider. It is NOT helpfull.
All I asked was "how to occupate my family 3 adults and 1 child in Ft.Lauderdale (Pompano Beach)"
WHY would you dig back and come up as nasty as you did? Puzzled...

Too bad you didn't read your own question, Ziana, where you ASKED if public transportation would be easy. I was not just being NEGATIVE. I was being HONEST.
Again I apologize for answering your questions (again) HONESTLY.

I will continue to answer other posters HONESTLY. Believe it or not other people often like to hear the truth. When they ask if transportation is easy, they want to be told if it ISN'T, not just a bunch of lies, that YES, it is easy as pie. Can you tell me why you asked that question, when you DIDN'T want to hear the truth? You will note, that everyone else who has responded has also told you a car is necessary.

Zaina, you have just said:
"This post DID NOT have anything about my husband hates to drive."

Will you please look up above in your third post, where you wrote the following:
"One more thing. My husband hates driving and we are not planning to rent a car. Is this easy to get to Ft.L and Miami and where-ever else by the bus or other public transportation?"

Now would you care to repeat that this post has nothing to do with driving? HUH?
