Well it isn't really news and it certainly isn't limited to NYC. Wherever someone wants to go there will be someone looking to make a buck out of it bspielman. Legally or illegally.

What never gets talked about by those renting out (landlords) or those who rent from them (tenants) is the real issue. The real issue is the impact on the NEIGHBOURS of these illegal renters.

When you live somewhere, you do not expect it to be a hotel with all the possible issues you can expect to have in a hotel from inconsiderate guests. But if the person in the aparment next to yours rents their place out while they are gone for a week, suddenly your home has been turned into what might as well be a hotel.

Hawaii has had such problems with this issue of ilegal rentals that have turned places into 'vacation rental' areas instead of homes, that those renting have found they are getting a rude and nasty reception from people living there.

I know of a condominium building in a small holiday destination in British Columbia, Canada, where about a third of all the condiminiums are rented out by the week in the tourist season. The owners who live there have been fighting for years to stop the owners who are renting their units out by the week, from doing do.

Imagine you have retired to your nice little condo on a lake to enjoy the good life. Then you discover that each week of the summer, 4-6 people move into the apartment to the left and right of you to party hearty and enjoy their week away from the city. That's called Hell. Now try to sell your unit to someone else. Good luck with that.

All the excuses third party companies come up with such as, 'it provides affordable accommodation for tourists who then spend money in the area but would not otherwise be able to afford to visit', say nothing about those who have to live with it.

I don't know what your beef is with me. I posted this only because it's a constantly recurring subject on this forum.

Talk about shooting the messenger!

I thought that what I wrote was clear bspielman. I am not in favour of illegal rentals and I find the real issue is never mentioned. The effect on others (neighbours).

I don't intend to shoot anyone but would love to be able to shoot both parties who engage in this illegal renting.

My comment re money was simply about how most things, this included come down to money. Money to be made trumps any concerns about how it might affect others.
