For moderate hiking in Yosemite, what kind of footwear?

What kind of shoes do you suggest for easy to moderate hikes; a real hiking boot or one that is good on varied terrains but looks like a running shoe. Thanks in advance.

For moderate stuff, cross-trainers are generally fine. Just make sure you've got decent support and traction.

I like Merrell shoes. I personally don't like the boots unless I am in mud, snow, or cold. They are heavier and hotter. I like the breathable stuff in the summer. I get the low cut shoes. If you turn your ankle a lot, go for a higher top, or then consider boots. It depends on where you are hiking and what season.

My DH hikes all the time in the sierra, (like most non-snow weekends) moderate & difficult and I doubt he'd ever wear boots. Just tennis/running shoes.

Most of the easy trails Ive done in flip flops or tevas at the most. Any kind of cross trainer will do...unless you are doing "real hiking" which most of the trails in the valley are not, in my opinion... many of them are walks.

I've used regular running shoes for hiking for many years. They've got me up and down Mt. Whitney a few times and many 10,000+ ft. mountains numerous times.

I think it is very foolish to hike in flip flops. Especially moderate hikes as indicated by the OP.

I agree.. my point is that many of the trails in the valley are actually walks, not hikes. The casual vistor to Yosemite doesnt need to purchase new footwear... that's all Im saying.

depends what you are used to. we were there in march this year and took both hiking and walking shoes and wore them both at different times. yosemeite is a jewel. if you go in summer look forward to crowds and heat.
