For first-timer, Kaanapali area hotel or quieter Napili condo?

Thanks to those who have answered earlier questions, I'm now hoping to get final input to push through my indecision and lock things in.

Typically we rent houses/villas on Caribbean vacations, and avoid the hotels. But for our first-time in Maui, is it better to be where the hotels are ... I'm thinking to get tips from other travelers/hotel workers???

Our criteria: near water, sea-turtles & snorkeling, plus a few bar & restaurant choices.

For our budget, we were looking at either Royal Lahaina or Kaanapali Beach Hotel, or for condos either Napili Point or Papakea Resort.

Seems like both places have the bar/restaurant (fewer in Napili), but maybe Napili wins on sea turtles? I know, making a decision based on sea turtles may sound strange to some... but there aren't many in my land-locked Massachusetts area!
