Food prices

How much can I expect to pay for food in New York?
I've asked about food previously, and was given several 'moderately' priced ones. What do New Yorkers consider 'moderate'? How much can I expect to pay for food such as pizza by the slice, deli sandwiches, dinner etc?

Andie, you can spend a little or a lot here, depends where you go. Pizza at a walk in by-the-slice place is usually around $1.50 to 1.75 plain, more with toppings (btw the slices are huge here). Whole pizzas run from about $10 to $15, and again, more with extra toppings. You can spend $10 for dinner or ten times that, but most restaurants will post their menus in their windows so you can see what they offer and their prices. Sandwiches... well, again, depending what you get and where you get it, think around $4 to $9. Have you looked at Zagats.com? Or try Citysearch.com. Either way have a great time, the food here is really the best.

A "moderately-priced" entree is about $12-$15. Of course in the more touristy areas prices are generally higher, and in less touristy areas the prices are lower. However, some places that charge $10 for an entree charge $8 for a margarita, so beware!

Pizza runs $1.50-$2.00 per slice, more w/toppings.

Deli sandwiches are in the $6-$9 range, generally (and can often feed 2 people).

You can get a slice of cheese pizza at Ray's Pizza (many locations) for $1.95

You can get sandwiches, knishes, sushi, etc. inexpensively at Zabar's.

S has it exactly right!
added info:
entrees at average "neighborhood" chinese restaurant $7-10 (more for seafood)--often have lunch specials with egg roll/fried rice/entree for about $5.50.
Normal sized takeout deli sandwiches (not from the big name restaurants)
about $4-6.
Many places in midtown serve a "toss your own salad" You choose items from among about 20-30 items behind the counter and they toss it for you--priced per base salad plus per item will get you a nice lunch for about $4- $8 (if you're reaonably restrained).

I think there are more inexpensive restaurants in NYC (and other large cities) than in smaller cities and towns.
Most restaurants are open all day (not just specified lunch and dinner hours), often 7 days a week, and have fast turnovers, so they can afford to charge less for entrees.
