Hello
We're hoping to visit SC for the first time in September, staying in either Folly Beach or Sullivans Island for a week. The published taxi fare from the airport there is reasonable but I expect we'd like to go in to Charleston for a day - is there a bus service? I've found mention of a shuttle between James Island County Park, the Convention & Visitor Bureau, Folly Beach County Park, and Folly Beach Fishing Pier but can't find any details of schedule.
Is this doable? (SO finds driving stressful and would really prefer not to have a car)
Thank you!
Folly Beach /Sullivans Island without a car

I am not super familiar w/those particular islands but visit many of the NC/SC islands regularly & you need a car for any of them. Even to do the smallist things, like get groceries.
ttt
You don't mention where you're staying, but I assume a rental condo/villa/house. In which case SO will simply have to get over driving (or you can drive). You all want to eat? You can't walk to a grocery store as noted. Hertz has a Mt.Pleasant location on the way to Sullivans, and probably the best rates. Use a triple A rate, or code LOCAL. It's a short taxi ride from the airport. Driving in the area is not difficult actually. You really need a vehicle.
In order to enjoy our area you will need a car. Tell us if you pick Sullivans or Folly and i can help you with the rest. They are two very different spots.
Ok, thanks, we may have to rethink. The rentals we were looking at on vrbo seemed to be walking distance to beach/restaurants/shops and while we are there we want to walk/swim/bike/kayak. No particular intentions of going further afield apart from a day trip to Charleston which I hoped we could do by this shuttle or the ferry from Sullivans Island.
Thanks Birgator for the Hertz tip, perhaps that would be easier than the airport. What's driving/parking in Charleston like?
I think you'd be more stressed out without a car, since you'd be spending valuable vacay time trying to figure out how to get places. Public transportation here is sadly lacking. There's no shuttle or ferry from Sullivans. Sullivans is lovely but very residential. There aren't a lot of rentals so if you've found one you like I say go for it. Make sure it's not near the small, but sometimes noisy restaurant section. Folly is funky and fun. it's popular with the younger crowd.
Driving and parking in Charleston is not hard but it costs. Here's a map of the garages:

I have been on kayak trips with Ralph:
