I just purchased this for my upcoming trip to NYC and overall am quite pleased. However, I am wondering if the hotels, restaurants, stores, etc have paid to be included. The reason I am asking is because I see some glaring omissions. For example, neither the Sheraton New York Towers nor the Sheraton Manhattan are on the hotel list. Also, the shopping is rather selective. Any insights? Thanks.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for your question. I'm the Restaurants & Hotels Editor for Fodor's. We never accept payment for placement in our guides. The selections in our books are made by our writers, who are local experts, as well as our editors. We only include properties that offer the best experiences for our readers, across all price points and property types. If you do not see a property listed, it's because we didn't choose it. Hope that helps!
Best regards,
Erica
Thank you for your reply. I must say that I would like to know what are your standards.
I see that the Grand Hyatt next to Grand Central is listed. I have stayed there and I thought it was awful! The room (a king bed room) was so small tnat when we set up the ironing board we couldn't move through the room. Also, the Grand Hyatt does not offer coffee in the room. You must go down to the lobby to purchase coffee. The Sheraton Manhattan offers coffee in the room.
I am absolutely sincere here. What are you standards!
We stayed at the Sheraton Manhattan and were quite pleased, and then we stayed at the Grand Hyatt (stupid move!)
I will be more than pleased to communicate with you privately so you will know that I am sincere.
Please tell me why you would include a property such as the Grand Hyatt and not the Sheraton Manhattan.
Having traveled quite a bit - throughout the world - I have found that travel guides such as Fodor's can be useful - but only to a point. They can be quite limited and omit the sort of info that would interest certain travelers. Thus - perusing a few guides can be helpful - but I have found that certain travel boards - such as this one - can be extremely useful for travelers since very knowledgeable locals participate - and they have info just not found in travel guides. The trick is finding a board that has enough traffic with savvy posters. Too bad - aol used to have some - but that has disappeared.
