My wife and I are flying from Rochester, NY to Denver,CO on one way plane tickets, renting a van, and then driving through CO,SD, WY, and ID for a couple of weeks plus. We didn't book round trip plane tickets because we are not sure exactly when we will finish our trip itinerary. Question is, is there a right or wrong way timewise when booking a flight home? Do you get nailed ($$) if you wait until the last moment? Is it even a concern? We have a laptop and will book Denver home when we get close, but my wife thinks you pay considerably more when you book so late.

Sometimes deals come up on airline web pages, for "fly to ---- this weekend for___" and you get a last minute deal, but you take your chances. I'd suggest you keep checking on one or two of the sites like expedia or travelocity or kayak and see what the trend is.
I think you are going to get nailed big time if you wait "days" before. Why don't you take a look now and see what comes up. Maybe it will just be be worth it to you to just "wing" it. You also might see what comes up (now) if you look X amount of time before your target date so you can get some sort of "real" idea, and not our gut feelings here. ;o)
Also, what time of year are you doing this. Who serves your home airport--lots of airlines or only a few?
Well, I jsut did what I suggested above and was amazed at the cheap fare. Travelocity has one way possibilities. I plugged in next week and the fare was $118!!
