Flying from Seattle to New York City / Niagra Falls

Flying from Seattle to New York City / Niagra Falls
My husband and I are traveling from Seattle to New York City. We plan to see the usual tourist attractions in New York City - will seek advice on that later. For now, my focus is on seeing Niagra Falls while on "that side of the U.S." I need your thoughts as to whether to see Niagra on the way to New York City, do a side/day or two trip from NYC to Niagra or see it on the way back to Seattle. Any recommendations?

You really can;t do a "side day" rip from NYC to Niagara Falls - it;s just too far. It takes more than 8 hours by car or train - plus time crossing the border (most of hth good stuff is on the Canadian side). You would have to fly up one day and fly back the next to really see much of anything.
If it were me I would fly to buffalo and rent a car there - either before or after flying on to NYC - depending on the convenience of flight times. I would then spend 2 nights on the Canadian side - to see the major sights and then perhaps a brief visit to Niagara on the Lake, which is a charming small town. If possible get a hotel facing the falls - which are floodlit at night and beautiful.

Well, you don't say how much time you have, but it doesn't make sense to do a side/day trip from NYC to Niagara. Your best bet would be one of the two other options you mentioned, either before or after your visit to NY.
Look into fares Seattle/Buffalo/NYC/Seattle, or the reverse. The sequence is really up to you, but personally, I'd do Niagara at the end b/c Niagara will be a bit more relaxing than NY.
While you should stay on the Canadian side of Niagara, you should definitely walk across the bridge to the NY side -- very easy to do and bring your pp - and spend a few hours there. You can get very close to the Bridal Veil falls and the rapids, and get a whole different view of the falls, and it's a lot less crowded than the Canadian side.
Don't miss the Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist.
The Marriott on the Canadian side has great views of the falls -- and a fabulous spa.

Seattle to NYC... enjoy that part... then NYC to Buffalo...drive 20 minutes to the Falls and finish your trip with Buffalo to Seattle... more flight choices at better prices with this route... have Fun...

it's really up to you whether to do it before during or after NYC. The very best way to get there is to fly. Jetblue.com does both routes. I think they do fireworks on Fri. nights over the falls in summer so if you're interested in seeing that, it may help you decide.
