fly to Vegas from Santa Fe or drive one day?
What to do? We will be in Santa Fe for five days in Oct. and then going to Vegas for five days before flying home to Ontario. Can't decide whether we should drive from Santa Fe to Vegas in rental car or fly. Any suggestions? We would be able to break the trip up so that we leave early one morning, sightsee and stay overnight somewhere and then continue the drive next morning to Vegas. Is the drive worthwhile or shall we skip it and fly?

The drive is a long stretch of highway through the the desert & high plateaus of NM & AZ. It's about 8hrs form Albequerque to Las Vegas. Along the way are several places you can stop. Abiqui mesa just outside ABQ, petrified forest, Grand Canyon, Hoover dam.
To me, only the GC is worth making this a drive trip instead of flying from ABQ to LAS. If you have time to add a full day, or at least a full morning to the GC, then I'd say drive and arrive in LV the 2nd evening. If you only have time for a hotel room, then fly.

You should price both options. With a one-way drop-off charge for the rental car, you could find that it's cheaper to fly. If you do want to fly, this is the time to buy your tickets. Be sure to check Southwest.

There are no direct flights from Santa Fe to Las Vegas. There are only flights to/from LA and Dallas.
You'd likely choose to fly from ABQ.
The drive from ABQ to Las Vegas is closer to 10 hours, not 8.
"Abiqui Mesa is just outside ABQ". I think you mean Acoma Pueblo.
Abiqui is closer to SF and is not a mesa.
If I drove, I would stop at Acoma EARLY,do the tour and then have lunch in Flagstaff then drop down to Sedona for the night and they head to Las Vegas.
October is pretty high season here in the southwest, so expect hotels to be pretty booked already and $$$.

And IF you fly, I'd do as Doug recommended and fly Southwest. Lots of non stop flights and they have sales regularly. Sign up for emails or follow them on Facebook to know when the sales take place; they usually last 2 days or so.

I agree with everything DebitNM said.
I drove from Albuquerque to Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago. It took me approximately nine hours with a couple of stops for gas and lunch. If I had had enough Southwest miles, I would have flown; they have nonstop flights which take about 90 minutes.
Unless you want to stop at Acoma Pueblo or the Grand Canyon, I would plan to fly between the two cities.

Nonstop flights from Santa Fe also include Denver (United Airlines) for a connection to Las Vegas.
It would be easier to drive to ABQ and fly Southwest to Las Vegas as suggested unless you want to make the long drive with a one-way rental charge.
FYI, American Airlines is pulling their non-stop service from LAX to Santa Fe this September.
