fly from Maui to Big Island for 2 or 3 days

I am flying to Maui for 8 nights. I have been there once before and I loved it. I have been getting worried about my choice to go there again. Now I wish I had made it a two island trip. Can I take an interisland flight flight to Hilo? Could I see enough of the volcano side in 2 nights?

I think 2 nights near the volcano is perfect. That's what we did a few months ago.

What about the flight? How much time will I lose? Has anyone flown lately? I missed a one day cheap flight special recently.

Where are you staying in Maui, that is, near an airport or not? The flight itself won't be more than 45 minutes, but getting to Kahului could be 45 minutes in traffic from Lahaina area, plus parking, checking in etc. I'd say take the earliest flight in the day -- then the most you lose is 1/2 a day.

I am not getting any good prices right now. Can I get a better deal if I call a few days before I want to do this?

I may be wrong, but other than some new flows that are unaccessible, there is currently little lava flow to be seen. Of course Pele could change her mind at any moment. Just wanted to make sure you didn't have high expectations of molten lava sighting.

Boston news just showed evening ariels of the lava flowing last night, so Pele is at work full time again! Hope you find reasonable flights!

If you're interested in staying near the volcano, we stayed at the Kilauea Lodge in a little cottage there and found it to be very charming. There's a good restaurant on site with a stone fireplace - pretty cozy for when it cools off at night.

If you go to the Aloha Airlines website and sign up for their "club," you can get better prices. It's free to sign up.
