The other option I have to surprise my boyfriend for his 37th birthday would be a long weekened to Florida. (Thurs - Mon) I have been to Florida before on Spring break when I was in college and we went to Ft. lauderdale, it was very nice (we stayed at Yankee Sheridan Clipper on A1) but it was for Spring break. I am looking to go down in the middle of November - I am looking for somewhere that we can relax, have an ocean view and just lay on the beach. Any suggesstions?

Mid November is definitely high season. Naples is pretty quiet and has an assortment of hotels including the Ritz, Naples Grande, and La Playa. Sunny Isles just north of Miami Beach has a lot of hotels on the ocean - Trump, Aqualina.... Bal Harbor has One - that very beautiful and in walking distance to Bal Harbor shops with lots of shopping an dining. The Keys is also a nice option - Checca Lodge just rebuilt after a fire. Hawks Cay is a huge resort.
I'm not an expert of North Florida - but I am sure you can also go to Clearwater or St. Petersberg on the west coast.
