Florida Keys & Miami
We are flying into Fort Lauderdale, driving straight to Key Largo and staying for 1 week. We are also planning several day trips along the Keys which will include Key West. We will also drive to Miami for a day trip. I'm trying to figure out how much to budget for meals for 7 days for my husband, my 9 year old daughter and myself keeping in mind that we will be eating complimentary Continental breakfast almost every morning at our Inn before we begin our day. Any ideas?? We have only planned road trips along the California coast but not done anything in Florida. Please help!

What Katzgar is trying to say (I think) is that, aside from Key West, you will have many different options for food. If you prefer to eat sandwiches and fast food, then you can get by on a relatively low budget, but if you plan to eat fresh seafood and eat in more upscale restaurants, you need to budget accordingly. Food in Florida is similar in price to that in California, so I don't think you should have any big surprises.
Just a thought: I would NOT do a day-trip to Miami. Rather, I would visit on the way back to Fort Lauderdale. And you might consider spending the night there. You don't say when you're going, but if it's this fall, this is still low season in Miami, and you can find a hotel even in South Beach for under $200 per night (perhaps less) if you are willing to stay a couple of blocks from the beach. But even some hotels closer to the beach can be relatively cheap this time of the year.
Key West is doable as a day-trip from Key Largo, but it's a long drive.

Hi Doug, we are leaving in a few weeks and we are definitely not staying in Miami. We thought about doing this but we wanted to stay in SOBE and the nice hotels are super expensive right now at $200+. Add resort fee. Add parking fee. You get the idea. Plus, we didn't want to unpack and repack only for 1 day in Miami. We are staying in Key Largo and from what I have researched the drive is about 1 1/2 hours from Key Largo to Miami. This seems very workable such as a trip from LA to Palm Springs. Why do you say not to do a day trip to Miami?
Regarding budget for meals which was my initial question - we plan to eat at moderately priced places with the exception of a splurge for dinner in Miami at Michy's.
And yes, our hotel room has a minifride and microwave for all those in-between meal times when a 9 year old is "starving".

Well, Key West has a bunch of Cuban groceries that usually offer one hot dish and a bunch of sandwiches at lunch, and of course Cuban sandwiches, at low prices. We liked Five Brothers.
The Pollo Tropical chain in and near Miami offers inexpensive marinated grilled chicken with the usual Caribbean accompaniments of black beans, rice, platanos, maduros, yuca, etc.
Grouper sandwiches.
