Florida Keys - Any suggestions?

I'll be visiting Key West for the 3rd time in March, and this time, I plan on renting a car to check out the other Keys.

Any suggestions as to which Keys deserve a look (and what we should be looking for) would be great!

Thanks in advance!

Michele take a short drive a little north of Key West to Big Pine Key one late afternoon.Once there drive around the small paved and unpaved roads on the Gulf side of US1 and watch for the tiny Key deer. They only exist in the Keys and are a real treat to see but remember the best time to look is an hour or so before dark.

Bahia Honda State Park, south of Marathon, has the nicest beach in the Keys. John Pennecamp State Park has great snorkeling, scuba and hiking.

PS. Don't feed the Key Deer. That's a no-no!

Islamorada is the prettiest key, in my opinion. Bahia Honda is also pretty, but small. And it's a state park (for whatever that's worth.) Sit on the swingset on Bahia Honda at sunset. Talk about Zen.
Also, if you want to do something truly different (although you're rental car won't help you) -- head over to Fort Jefferson. It's about 2 hours by boat. 30 minutes if you fly. It's an old fort in the middle of the ocean. kinda cool. have fun.

Michele:

I agree with the Ft Jefferson idea (though you do need a boat or plane) it is about 70 miles northwest of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico. We had a great one-day trip out there!

We always like to visit the Dolphin Research Center on Grassy Key. They have tours daily. go to www.dolphins.org for more info

When in March you going? This is our second time there, and will be there 3/21/01-3/28/01 !! We like to go to the local, off the beaten path, bars and restaurants. Go to Schooner warf bar, and eat...local folk are there, and food is hot and less costly. you can sit on the roof, and look over the Harbor, and waitstaff will bring your food up to you. Singer Mike McCloud is a riot! We also walked the piers, looking at ships and boats. The captains, etc. are all real nice to talk to. Go to Marathon Airport for the seafood fest. In March, you can sample all the local seafood, really cheap ($5-$10) email me direct, it would be cool to see each other there!have fun! Mike, Heather, Whitney and Jeff
