We're planning to spend one night in Florence, Oregon the first week of August. We're trying to decide between the Landmark Inn and the Riverhouse Inn/Motel. They both look pretty good so I'm looking for anything that might tip the balance one way or other.

Florence is a popular stop for the Oregon Dunes, but usually not for an overnight since the town's not on the beach, and has only one oceanview hotel/motel, the Driftwood Shores. So, I'm curious; why Florence, and why not beachfront lodgings? If you've got flexibility, I'd suggest something in Yachats.

Maybe sunbum (another frequent poster here) knows the Landmark and Riverhouse, but otherwise, I'm guessing you'll have to go with your gut. Or, you can trust the reviews on TripAdvisor, which show Riverhouse as the 2nd most popular lodging in town, whereas Landmark isn't even listed.

Have not stayed at either one of those - if I stay in Florence I stay at the Driftwood Shores - but as Beachbum says, Yachats- is a better choice and that is where I usually stay

Thanks. We do have flexibility. I had been thinking that we would stay in Florence and drive north to Yachats and stay. Now I realize it's much closer than I thought. So, I'd rather stay on/near the beach.

So, where would you suggest (from personal experience preferably) in Yachats? We aren't big into 'resort' type places - unless the location / price / view / service are right.

Really, almost anyplce that's clean, friendly and reasonably priced. Of course, view & proximity to the beach are major plus factors.

If it's from personal experience, the only place in Yachats I can recommend is Overleaf Lodge: http://www.overleaflodge.com/. I think it has probably the best setting of any lodging on the Oregon coast; just spectacular. If that doesn't fit into your budget, it's sister property, The Fireside, has almost as good a setting.

Well I will guess beachbums answer and say he would recommend the OverLeaf Lodge

Along the same strip is the Adobe Motel and the Fireside
I have stayed at all 3 and my favs would be the Overleaf and Adobe - depends on your budget I guess - the Adobe being the middle range of those 3 ( its also the only one with a restaurant) but great ocean views and a nice walking path between the 3

beachbum/sunbum: Thanks very much. Just made a reservation at the Adobe. Person I spoke was very friendly. Middle of the road w/ a good view sounds good to me.

Any suggestions a couple of hours north in oregon (on the ocean). I don't have an itinerary or anything. We'd just like to enjoy some natural beauty (and good food).

Well, the obvious choice would be Cannon Beach. But, it's wildly popular, and that many/most places have minimum stay requirements might be an issue for you. That said, places I'm betting you'd like, from low to high end: Lands End Motel, The Waves Motel, Inn at Schooners Cove, Hallmark Resort, toss-up between Ocean Lodge & SurfSand Resort, and Stephanie Inn. Oh... forgot about the Tolovana Inn, which I'd place towards the low end. But, it's far enough from the small downtown that I really don't consider it to be in Cannon Beach.

The less obvious choice is Manzanita. I don't know of any place on the beach there, but the Sunset Surf is across the street. It's a great value.

Has anyone stayed at the Silver Surf Motel near Yachats? We have 5 adults and they have 2 BR cabins reasonably priced. The beach doesn't look as picturesque as some others nearby....

Have not stayed there and can't picture where it is.

The Adobe has 2 bedroom suites - with pull out sofa in LV room and kitchen - with fabulous views- woud that work for you?
