Flight/Hotel Galveston or Houston b4 a cruise?
I am meeting a group in Galveston to go on my very first cruise ever!! I am flying to the Houston area the day before and can't decide 1) which airport 2)whether to stay in Houston or get to Galveston. Any experience? This is MY week away from responsibility and I want to have a peaceful & relaxing interlude between my flight and the cruise, both coming and going. Any suggestions on hotels, getting to and from the port, things to do, etc. Thanks!

Hobby (HOU) is about 30 miles closer to Galveston than Intercontinental (IAH), but many airlines only serve one airport and not the other; and you may have other considerations like how to get to port.

Hi Sally
To add to rkkwan's comments - you don't say whether you're using one of the cruise line's buses to get to Galveston or you're on your own. If the former, most go to IAH but there is limo/shuttle service from both airports to Galveston. For the peaceful interlude, I'd go straight to Galveston. There are several nice hotels and B&Bs in the Strand area, which is very close to the docks, as well as some good restaurants, shops etc. They tend to fill up just before and after cruises, so I'd check fairly quickly if your trip is in the near future.

Just to give you an idea, if you have to drive yourself to Galveston expect about 1 1/2 hours from Bush Intercontinental Aiport and more like 45 min. to an hour from Houston Hobby. If you want to relax, I would try for a flight into Hobby because you will already be on the Southeast part of town and if you can avoid rush hour that is even better. I agree with the previous poster who said to drive into Galveston the night before or as soon as you fly in.

Thank you all for replying. Good points.
I didn't even think about rush hour. Will the cruise shuttles take you to a Galveston hotel or only to the ship? The limo services I saw online appear to be very reasonable. Would anyone tell me their opinion limo vs shuttle?
