Planning for June, driving from Flagstaff to Cortez as part of a much longer roadtrip, the most direct way seems to be Routes #89 and then #160 from Tuba City to the Colorado border at Tec Nos Pos (great name!) , but if we go up #163 through Monument Valley, to Bluff, there's a small State Road #162 on the map , which comes out a bit further north of Tec Nos Pos. We've been to Monument Valley before, don't plan to stay there, but know it's a great drive - just am not sure whether Route #162 would be OK for two Old Aussies in a hire car. Does anyone know, please?

Which state - CO AZ or UT is the #162 you are talking about?
My map shows 163 to 262, not 162 ... this road is OK as far as driving conditions, follows the San Juan river to Aneth. Is this the road you meant? The drive was nothing special and will add maybe an hour to your trip, but it's not difficult.
Last minute, not much time, but will check posts on the way where possible . Yes, it is the road to Aneth- in Utah - just looked on google maps.
If it's only an hour longer, we will probably do it, because the shortest way, the Indian Road 160 to Tec Nez Pos doesn't look very scenic on a mile-by-mile site I found. Thank you, DebitNM and Bill_H.
Carrabella, I just looked on-line and indeed the road I meant is shown as Utah state road 162, so you were right in your first post.
I had looked at a Rand McNally map dated 2004 and that map shows 163 for the road number. Either a misprint or they changed the road number.
Probably a misprint, but they did change the number of highway 666 a few years back because people complained that '666' was the sign of the devil (I'm not making this up ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_491#Elimination_and_renumbering_of_US_666 )
