Fla Keys to NYC drive with young kids

Hello to all Fodorites,

I'll be driving from the Florida Keys to New York City in January 2013, with kids aged 5 and 2. We have time for 5 nights on the road and I was thinking of stops in St Augustine, Fla, Savannah Ga, Charleston SC, Fayetteville NC and Fredericksburg VA.

Does anyone have suggestions of i) alternative/better overnight stops ii) child friendly accommodations iii) child friendly activities/sites/detours along the route?

Any suggestions or other advice really appreciated. We're from Europe and are not used to long roadtrips!

Thanks

Have you or your kids ever been to the East Coast of the US? Our Nation's Capitol seems a glaring omission, as does the Orlando area attractions. That leads me to believe either you have visited them before or have no interest in such things. If you and your kids would have no interest in theme parks or museums, then you need to tell us exactly WHAT activities you find interesting before you will get efficient ideas.

Agree that DC is an obvious stop that you ahve missed - evenif you can only spend one day there (it's worth at elast 3 or 4).

The other thing is that you are traveling in January, I hope you're from a place where yuo routinely drive in ice and snow. There are no guarantess on any particular dates - but any place from VA north yuo are quite likely to get ice, sleet or snow - and driving can be much slower and more difficult. If you aren;t comfortable driving under these conditions - perhaps you are better off flying or taking the train. (This year our winter had been totally od - the warmest since they started keeping records.) But typically the DC through NYC area and north get 6 or 7 snow storms (perhaps only a couple of inches - but can be up to 2 feet) every winter.

Thanks to all for the great replies so far. Yes we have done Washington and places north of there before. And my kids (or at least their parents) aren't ready yet for the crowds at the Orlando resorts.

What we're really interested in is seeing the real America, away from the big urban centres - historical places, regional culture and food etc. For example we had a fantastic visit to Amish country last year, which was a unique experience that the kids loved.

We're really open to any suggestions or ideas. Thanks again !

I should have mentioned some activities my kids have enjoyed in the last year: fruit picking at a farm, visiting a firefighter museum, riding on a historic scenic railway line, digging sandcastles on a beach etc.

So what's the deal on the rental car? Flying to Miami and then heading for Key West?
Could you take an Amtrak train north from Miami after returning the rental car? Do you know how much if any drop off fee you will pay if you don't return to the place where you rented?

Hope you realize that St. Augstine to Charleston is only about a 5 hour drive. So the bulk of your driving will be on the front and back ends of your trip. Also, just curious, what is the appeal of Fayetteville NC?

Thanks again for the questions - i should have been clearer up front. We're keen to drive so that we can get off the beaten track for stop-offs and overnight stays.

Fayetteville wasn't picked for any scientific reason - it just loooked like it left a reasonable final driving leg to New York. We'd welcome better ideas of towns/places to stay from anyone who knows the territory.

Have never been to Fayetteville or heard of anybody going there that is why I asked. One suggestion in place of Fayetteville would Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Newport News area. There is a lot going on here including one of the largest Naval bases on east coast, bridge/tunnel drives to chincoteague island, beaches, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Busch Gardens, etc. Just an idea.

Skip Fayetteville--it's only a couple of hours from Charleston and is the home of Fort Bragg. And it could be a pretty long day's drive to NYC from there.
You could drive up the coast from Charleston on Route 17 to Wilmington NC, and then go over to I95 to continue on up north. It would be about a 3-4 hour actual drive with no particular stopping.
There is the Battleship North Carolina at Wilmington that might be a fun stop for the kids..

I worked in Fayetteville for 6 months at Ft. Bragg. Unless you are REALLY interested in the US Army, it might not be what you are looking for. It's about 3 hours from Charleston.

I like gmoney's suggestion. Williamsburg and Yorktown are neat.

Decide if you'll take 95 (yawn) or do part of the Highway 17 drive, like Gretchen said. I like the towns north of Charleston on 17: McClellanville, Georgetown and Pawley's Island. There are a couple of nice plantations up there too.

Sounds like Fayetteville is crossed off my itinerary!

I like the sound of a detour on the 17 north of Charleston - thanks Suewoo. Any thoughts on good places to stay in that direction. And - forgive my ignorance - but what are the plantations?

Fayetteville's not a bad place at all, but I just think your time is better spent in other places.

The plantations north of Charleston are Hopsewee:
http://www.hopsewee.com/

and Hampton:
http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/ha...roduction.aspx

The ones closer to Charleston are Middleton, Magnolia, Drayton, and Boone Hall.

If you don't want to travel far on the day you leave Charleston, drive up the coast to Wilmington and stay there.

Since you are going in January be sure to checek the opening hours of the varuios attractions. In midwinter - as well as bad weather - you often get shorter openng hours at many attractions - due to weather and much earlier darkness.

Right. But it's a great time to visit Charleston. The camellias will be blooming. We hope.

With kids yours age, I might just pass through Savannah, and spend more time in Charleston. There are some kid friendly things there--the aquarium and the aircraft carrier.
