FL & CT move to CO
Hello -
My boyfriend and I are looking for some recommendations. He lives in Florida and I live in Connecticut - we are both moving to Colorado. We looked into PODS thinking the following: have his stuff packed in a POD, then moved to my place in CT to add my items, then forward it over to CO. We are traveling for work a bit, so we were going to keep the items in POD storage until May. The total cost for all of that was almost $6,000.
We have thought about movers, storage units, etc. We are selling his car in Florida and keeping my car in Connecticut - therefore, we do know that whatever we do, he's packing his items in Florida, then flying to Connecticut where we are both driving to Colorado.
What will be the easiest/cheapest way to do this move? Does anyone have experience with anything similar? We're taking his couch and bed as well as my couch. All of his things fit in one room and all of my things fit in one room, for reference on how much stuff we have.
He's at the point of just rented an SUV and a trailer, but there's still my car. Any advice anyone can provide to make this journey smooth would be greatly appreciated!

Not easy but I'll give it a shot: He rents a small U-Haul that will hold all his stuff. He drives north through Charlotte to get on I-81 in Virginia.
You rent a bigger U-Haul that can tow your car behind.
Meet near Carlisle, PA and transfer the stuff from his U-Haul to yours. If he has extra stuff, it can go into your car. Trade in his U-Haul near Carlisle and then make your way west to Colorado in the big U-Haul.
If your place in Colorado is not ready to be moved into, just rent a storage unit near your new home.
MY DW and I moved from PA to Oregon 10+ years ago. We loaded almost all of our household into 14' of a 55' air-ride trailer. We drove our 2 cars to central Oregon and got there a day ahead of our mover. We moved all of our stuff into the garage since we could not occupy the house for 2 more days.

Getting rid of more stuff???
I have a hard time believe moving a POD from Florida to CT then to Colorado would be a money saver? Are you sure about that part of the plan??
And yes I did something similar (Vermont to Seattle) many years ago. I shipped a dozen boxes UPS and took only what fit in my car.

my son moved chicago to san francisco and was charged just under 4000 for the packing, moving and unpacking with a moving company. the distance would be about the same as from Ct to Co i think. In any case, get rid of as much as you can. Florida style furniture might not work in colorado, room sizes and the furniture you have might work, etc. Figure out what you cannot live without and sell the rest or donate.

Am in the sell it camp also. REally take a look at it and see if it is worth the time and trouble and money to move it. Definitely NOT a PODS. It is a GREAT way to move a household but not two rooms. DD and DSIL moved from CO to NC doing it, but DSIL is a SKILLED and profesional packer.
If you must keep the furniture, have him load it in a rental van after selling his car, drive to CT and load your stuff and drive it to CO.
YOu should also see how much a moving company will charge to just move from the two locations.
We moved from NYC, renting a van for DH to drive, and I followed with 3 children and the dog in the car.

And if you can afford it, do NOT buy a bunch of cheap furniture once you get to Denver.
I can think of all kinds of reasons why that transferring stuff between U-hauls might not work. Let's start with POURING rain.

What if he sells his car in Florida, rents a uhaul loaded with whatever he's keeping, drives it to CT, then you both load the POD once with both of your things? That should probably save you on charges for two deliveries.
Also, if you are moving to the city of Denver, there are potential permits needed to leave a POD on the street if it can't fit into a street parking space. When our driver arrived he almost refused to leave it because he didn't think it would fit.
