My husband and I will be visiting Charleston, SC for the first time, we plan on going the first week of October, hopefully there's no hurricanes. Is downtown the place to stay? We do not want to pay a lot for a hotel, can anyone recommend hotels under $150, we don't need anything fancy, just a clean room. How is the Double Tree Inn, the location looks good and the prices seem good.
We don't mind renting a car and staying out of town if there's nice hotels with a lesser rate. Would it be better to stay by Ashley River.
Also, if we want to visit Savannah is it an easy day trip or should we plan on spending the night in Savannah.
Fist time visitor to Charleston, SC needs advice on hotel

Stay in the area around Meeting and Market streets. The Double Tree is a good choice. You will be able to walk everywhere you want to go. Good restaurants, parks and shopping are all in that area.
We staYyed at the Andrew Pinkney Inn just around the corner from hanks.
Great location. Good hotel.
Would stay there again.
A rental will be at least $30 a day and parking will cost $10-$15 per day to park in a public garage, so factor that in as you look at prices.
There are ok places outside the Historic District, but if it's your first time I recommend you stay in the HD. It's nice to be able to walk out the door into the action.
If you find a really cheap place outside of Charleston you probably don't want to stay there.
