Just want some r & r...first week of October. Any suggestions for hotel/resort on beach. Must offer chairs/umbrellas for shade. Not South Florida. Thanks.

It depends upon the beach, also some hotels/motels supply them for free, you'll have to do your research.

I've been to South FL and loved it but would like to go to St. Augustine, FL one of these days on vacation. It is the oldest city in FL and historic along with having beaches. You may want to do some research in that area. Very affordable area.

I was in St Augustine once (in Feb) & it was freezing. Not sure it will be warm enough in Oct for beach. Why not south Fla.?

I don't know about the hotels here or what exactly you're looking for, but I live in Melbourne Beach which is 30 minutes below Cocoa and 45 above Vero. It is definitely warm enough to swim in the ocean and the "snowbirds" haven't made their migration yet - making this still the offseason. But it's family oriented and quiet. Surrounding beaches include Indialantic, Indian Harbour and Satellite Beach.
Also the west coast is very nice too, eg, Sanibel.

It is still warm enough for the beach. Actually it's a very nice time because the kids are back in school so it isn't that crowded.

I personally like the Gulf Coast & the white sand beaches. St. Pete/Clearwater, Sarasota, Marco Island/Naples are all good areas to get some R&R. Most hotels will have chairs & umbrellas for rental.

Key West is beautiful and Smathers Beach was recently voted one of the best beaches in the U.S.A. I live in Fort Lauderdale area and am going to Key West in June. October should be a great time to be there. If you go, don't bother with a rental car, it is expensive to park and there is very little parking. The shuttle services are cheap and easy to use. Sanibel/Captiva is also a great place to go, but the beaches there don't begin to compare to Southeast Florida. If you want more info on this area, let me know.

Have nothing against south Florida but my parents used to live in Hollywood FL so have spent alot of time there and looking for a change.

Have you ever been to Destin? October is beautiful there - stay at the Sandestin Resort which gives you lots of options for accomodations. Great beach, weather, restaurants, golf, tennis, etc.
You won't be disappointed!

If you want some suggestions for places to stay, check out the bookstore and then go to the internet travel sites such as expedia, orbitz, yahoo, etc. Also, USA WEEKEND recently had an article on the best beaches and there were lots in N.W. Florida that were mentioned. You might want to see if you can find that article. The Discover Travel Channel website might have some info, too. If you want peace and quiet, try North Hutchinson Island on the east coast. It's near Jupiter. There are supposed to be some nice places up there on the beach, too.

I don't think going to N. FL beaches will be a problem at the beginning of Oct. It is way different than going in Feb. By Feb. there has been about 2-3 months of cooler/winterlike weather (50s and 60s) which makes the water temp lower water temp which makes it feel colder on land. Oct. is only 1 month after Labor Day and the water has had 5 months to really warm up which will allow the land temp to stay warm. I went to Ft. Lauderdale area beginning of Nov and it was 85, in Orlando I remember it being 77 and this was Nov. Heck, the Carolinas in October can be in the 70s and 80s easily.

October is still hurricane season in Florida and the gulf and Atlantic are still pretty warm. Air temps can still get into the upper 80's and 90's.

Any decent resort will have chairs and umbrellas. Someplaces they are free, other places charge. LMF
