I have been getting a lot of help from all of you. I have one more question. We h;ave a wedding on Long Island on Oct 1. On Oct. 3rd I was going to start a loop thru Hudson Valley, then over in to Vermont to see the colors and back down thru Western Mass and western Conn. and then end touring the Conn. coast. Leaving out of JFK on Columbus Day Oct 10..For fall foliage should I do the way I stated or start on Conn. coast go up then thru western Conn and Mass into Vermont and then back down thru the Hudson Valley.
first week of Oct. in New York, Conn, and Vermont

You are awfully far south for leaf peeping so early in the year. The leaves change first in the centers of the states - away from the coast - and at higher elevations. The chances along the coast are typically later. Hudson Valley and CT coast are usually later in oct.
I think you need to check out some of the leaf changing web sites that track the changes day by day - and be ready to adjust your trip. But I would start heading for central VT and NH and in the mountains for the best chance at color in beginning Oct.
Rutland, VT is at highest around Columbus Day. Extrapolate from there.
Be aware of heavy traffic leaving VT on Columbus Day.

If I leave early on Columbus day from Tarrytown new york and go on the opposite side of teh river will I be ok for traffic...
