I will be visiting Providence for one day in October. I will be staying downtown. What should I make sure that I see within walking distance of downtown? The Waterfires will be going on at night. I love Italian food and would like to try one of the restaurants on Federal Hill. It is a special occasion - are there any sugestions? Is Federal Hill within walking distance of downtown or is a cab neccessary? Any suggestions to make the most of my visit are appreciated!
First visit to Providence

Federal Hill's a little too far to walk, but there's the Green Line Trolley, every 15 minutes, last run ~10:00pm.
Schedule and route at
www.ripta.com
Green Line trolley is route 91/92. There's also a Gold Line that goes N/S to other attractions within Providence.
Once a year we make a pilgrimage to Al Forno in Providence....wonderful, wonderful restaurant.
I hope they are still serving their mint julips in October....marvelous!!
An Gracie's- a wonderful small restaurant that had bween in Federal Hill, but not I'm told is next to the Trinity Rep. Theatre on Westminster St. R.I.S.D. has a wonderful shop, where there students, alumni and faculty sell their designs, also on Westminster- You will see the trolley stops all over town, and it is a great way to see the city, getting on and off at will. In Federal Hill, be sure and stop at Venda Raviola- and for dessert, Pastiche, also on the Hill.
If you have time the RISD museum is wonderful, on Benefit St, there also are several historic homes you may tour, as well as the Providence Atheneum. Farther up the hill is Brown Yniversity, well worth a walk around. Check out the Providence Website, they have a great booklet that really will give you all the info about what to see and do in the city (as well as a map.)
