My husband and I are starting to plan our first trip together without our kids (who are 6 mo and 2.5 yrs). We will probably be going sometime between mid October and mid December 2005...I love the planning part almost as much as the trip, so I'm getting started!

We are leaning towards a warm climate as we live in Montana, but are open to all suggestions. Trip length will probably be 4-7 days.

I'd love to hear about your favorite places!

Arizona would be warm (especially Phoenix or Tucson), and you wouldn't have to travel for hours to get there.

love the places mentioned but seems to me a tropical island might be a complete escape. even tho i love the southwest if you want to keep it close, i also recommend the pacific nw coast. i understand there are many cozy b&b's along that coast i've only stayed in hotels there. otherwise, san diego gets the vote, it's very different from montana (which i love and was there for two weeks last year!)

The two hardest places to visit with children that small, IMO, would be the beach and Vegas.

I vote for Cancun (commercialized I know but gorgeous beaches and FUN) and Las Vegas.

I was actually thinking Vegas. It's not my favorite destination, but it's a great escape from kids. It's very grown up, with the shows and the gambling and drinks and such. The kids won't be missing anything, really, so you'll have none of the, "Oh, Junior would love it so much here, we have to bring him back, oh I miss him!" I always feel a bit guilty when I travel without my kids to places they would really really like. Also, Vegas weather tends to be good. There are a lot of directions you can go, like turning it into more of a spa trip, or taking some side trips out of town into the desert. And it's always fun to get dressed up and go to dinner, right? Even if you don't love-love-love to gamble.

Thanks everyone for your input! I have to admit I'm thinking bigger and further away than the SW or So. Cal, but sfamylou's comment about "I bet the kids would love this" really hit me. I know that I will think my daughter (2 year old) would love so many things that maybe we should go somewhere I won't feel like she is missing.

How about the Florida Keys? I'm dreaming of seeing Bahia Honda some day.

You are also going at a great time for good deals on cruises - you could do the Caribbean or Mexico.

Then there is the Bahamas...


We're going on a cruise which includes a day in St. Thomas - we're going to head over to St. John to snorkel. The more I'm reading, the more I hope to go back for an extended stay.

I reccommend any of the following, based on experience. We recently stayed at the Grand Melia in Cancun. It was delightful, and you don't even have to leave the resort, if you don't care to. Also the Registry resort in Naples, Florida, very lovely and romantic.(Check them out online, their photos are accurate depictions).
In the not so warm category, Burlington Vermont is beautiful in Mid October, very romantic, and the kids would hate it. My #1 Choice for the second honeymoon, Paris, France. It is thrilling, romantic, (and the kids won't mind) and you'll never forget it. Bon Voyage.
