I am a single gay male, 41 years old. I will be coming to Fire Island this summer for the first time from the West Coast. I plan to be there about 4-5 days. I was wondering about the best place to stay? I see where there are some studios and bungalows available in Cherry Grove. Would this be a good place? I want to be near shops and restaurants but I am not an all night partier. I just want to be near a gay beach/town.
Thanks
First trip to Fire Island

You will get better information on a gay travel site, like Outtraveler.com
My friends who are gay have a house at the Pines, which has a large gay population. Don't go to Fire Island myself - so don;t know about Cherry Grove.
The Pines and Cherry Grove are both gay. I'd be careful of private rentals where you don't know what kind of condition the place will be in. Some info here http://www.fireisland.com/accommodations/hotels/hotels/
It is a short walk between the two towns.
I visited there some decades ago.
I saw Sylvia Syms singing in a Cherry Grove nightclub.
It was different.
There is an article about Fire Island Pines in the style section of today's New York Times.
