First time visit to New Orleans: Hilton Riverside or New Orleans Marriott?
I've always wanted to go and now I am going in late November for a work conference. The choice of hotels is between Hilton New Orleans Riverside or New Orleans Marriott. Which one would you recommend?
I will have additional questions as I get closer to the dates.

OK, based on my research on Trip Advisor and elsewhere, it looks like Hilton is a slightly better option. I will not be partying. Safety is my #1 priority. Any suggestions for what to do in the off hours? What NOT to miss?

I always have a meal at Commander's Palace when I'm in NO. The shrimp and tasso hennican appetizer and strawberry shortcake are some of my favorite things to eat on this earth. I also like walking around Jackson Square and checking out the art for sale. NO is a great town for wandering around and people watching. Food and music everywhere!

@Hobbert, thank you so much for sharing your expertise. I am new to NO and having people's perspectives has always helped me narrow down my research. I don't have countless hours to peruse the web, so I appreciate your recommendation!

Which Marriott? There are about 7 or 8 all over downtown ... it sort of depends on where your conference is if it is downtown. How long are you staying??
If you can do lunch, you will have lots of excellent choices at significantly less cost. At some places dinner reservations are a must.
The Aquarium is world class as is the WWII Museum. Across the street from WWII is the Ogden Museum which is worth a whirl. The almost free ferry across the Mississippi to Algiers and back gives a unique view of the City and the River.

The New Orleans Marriott is the one on Canal, adjacent to the French Quarter. (We ate at the restaurant about 5 years ago - it was very good, but there are better options in New Orleans - so many great places to eat, so little time LOL).

New Orleans Convention Center. The Hilton is a bit closer. I am apprehensive about walking to the Convention Center by myself. Both hotels provide shuttles to the Convention center but I don't know how reliable those shuttles are. Thank you for weighing in.

The shuttles will be fine for you. I'd choose the Marriott for location. It's directly adjacent to the French Quarter and allows you to walk everywhere. The Hilton is about 10 or 15 minutes by foot from the Marriott.

I'd stay at the Marriot to maximize your free time - you'll be right on the edge of the FQ. I wouldn't have any qualms about walking to and from the conference if you want to. Some of that area gets deserted at night, but during the day is fine.

The feel that that the Hilton Riverside is a slightly nicer hotel than the Marriott on Canal but it's a much further walk from the French Quarter (and from many of the restaurants that you might want to check out.) For convenience, I would stay at the Marriot, esp if you can take a shuttle to the convention center.

I am back, safe and sound. I have to say that I didn't see much due to the work obligations and will have to return again to truly experience it. Thank you all for your input. In the end, I stayed at Hilton Riverside, which worked out OK.
