First time in Savannah GA. & we have 2 days. What are the must sees & do's??

We will be in Savannah for 2 days and nights the end of April. This will be our first trip and we would like to see the highlights. FYI...we don't like to shop, we love history, antiquing, architecture and food (not necessarily in that order) I have some good restaurants suggestions from a previous post so that's covered. But what about the antebellum homes...obviously we can't see them all so which would you suggest. Also, has anyone taken canoe's through the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. That sounds like fun! alligators, bald eagles, otters, etc.

Two days is the bare minimum to see and enjoy Savannah but it will be enough to encourage you to return.

There are several tours of the historic district that are excellent as well as tours that concentrate on "the book".

If memory serves, there are not a great number of historic homes that are open to the public but those that are, are worth seeing. Savannah has several good web sites that will give you a lot of detailed information.

If you haven't booked a room, I highly recommend The Foley House Inn on Chippewa Square. A lovely, small inn in the best location in town for walking. Enjoy Savannah!

Thanks for the information: I do have some websites that I have been looking at but it's hard to know time frame and approx time you may need to see some of the sights. I was hoping for some feedback as far as that concerned. We are staying at the Foley House and looking forward to it. We heard it was very nice and the location is great!

Toni...we used to live there and I've written quite a bit in other notes in the past. You should be able to pull those up doing a word search for "Savannah". I tend to be overly detailed when I write, so there are volumes! gt; Unfortunately I haven't got a lot of time this morning to respond but did want to tell you that you are staying in a great B&B in a wonderful location. It is truly in the heart of the historic district and on one of the prettiest squares. My best friend lives directly across the square from Foley House in a beautiful row house.

With only 2 days to see the city, don't waste time with the Savannah Nat'l Wildlife Refuge! It's fun to do if you have all the time in the world, but you don't. Actually, I've never seen a canoe over there--that may be something new since we moved. You can drive through and people often will do that primarily to see the alligators--the birds really aren't that much in evidence. By the way...it's actually on the South Carolina side of the river, across the bridge.

Do take one of the trolley or bus tours to orient yourself to the city, then walk afterwards, returning to the places that interested you the most. Most of the tours include at least one home tour. The best Savannah has to offer is from Bay St down to Forsyth Park, with the squares that are on Bull St from Bay to the park being the prettiest the city has to offer. You'll love the architecture. You'll want to see River St. too of course, but that's tourist-trap heaven...don't waste too much time there.

Antique shops are often tucked into the basements of row houses...there aren't as many as you'd expect. There's one in the square just before Forsyth Park (Monterey Square I believe) that I always enjoyed, but you'll need to ring to get in. It belongs to Alex Raskin and I believe is just called Raskin's...its on the corner of Bull in that square, you can't miss it.

If you can't find any of my previous posts let me know or if you have any specific questions I'd be glad to try to help. Don't mind email, but I'll check back here as well.. Unfortuantely, going the end of April you'll miss the majority of the azaleas but hopefully some will still be in bloom. You'll find the city wonderful none-the-less and should be able to see it fairly well if you get up and moving early both days. Have fun..

Don't let anything keep you from eating a lunch or dinner at Lady & Sons in the Historic District if you love incredibly, howlingly good, downhome cooking!

Founder of the Girl Scouts

Antiques: On the north most part of savannah, there are a bunch of shops, one shop looks like a warehouse but has lots of

You can get a good overview and see all homes from a trolley tour by greyhound. Advise if only have short amount of time.

Then, pick out what homes you wish to see more of and walk.... Savannah is a walking town.

Go to Elizabeth's on 37 for great food. Do not eat at Mrs. Wilkes restaurant. It is overrun with tourists and recently was in trouble with the health dept for reserving food that had been on the tables and not eaten. (It's a family style restaurant.) I will differ from a previous poster. If you get enough of all of the cutesy store, go to the Sav'h Wildlife Refuge. it is a nice escape.
