Looking for a Hotel in the French Quarter We are first time vistors? We will be there in May

Assuming that you're not wanting to shell out major bucks (and even so, don't expect to pay less than $150-200/night), here are a few recs:

Place d'Armes--nice courtyard, includes continental b'fast, between Chartres and Royal in the Quarter. (Caveat Emptor: some rooms don't have windows, so be sure to ask)

Le Richelieu--nice courtyard, with pool. On Chartres.

Prince Conti--complimentary continental breakfast. On Conti Street just off Bourbon.

Hotel Ste. Marie--nice courtyard with pool, just off Bourbon street on Toulouse.

Of course, there are other far pricier places, but these are some of my favorites. NB: if you want more peace and quiet, ask for a room that overlooks that courtyard. If you want to see more action, ask for a room that overlooks the street. Many of these hotels I mentioned have balconies that open up to either venue.

If you're going for Jazz Fest, prices will be astronomical all over town, and most likely sold out already--FYI.

If you are willing to shell out major bucks, I just stayed at Maison Orleans and it was phenomenal! It is a boutique section of the Ritz Carlton in the French Quarter. The decor is gorgeous; the service is great (you have a butler for the room); it's quiet; and the rooms are decent sized. I've also stayed at the Fairmont a couple of times and enjoyed it. It's just at the edge of the Quarter. Sometimes you can get good prices there online. I've stayed at the Monteleone. Grand old hotel in the Quarter. We had a suite which was very nice although I've heard some of the regular rooms are small. Have a fabulous time!

Don't go to the Hotel Maison de Ville...it was ranked one of the best in Conde Naste, but it is run down, smells like mildew, and was a big disappointment.

On our first but hopefully not last trip to NO we stayed at the Omni Royal Orleans. We got a very reasonable rate on their internet site. The room we had was NYC small but very well decorated so we were perfectly comfortable. The rest of the hotel was lovely and service was right on. It is located on Royal and St.Louis so the location is excellent. Very short walks to Bourbon, Jackson Sq, the river, the shops on Royal St. and the street cars to the Garden District. As first time visotors we were very comfortable with the locale. The rooftop pool is very picturesque. I would not hesitate to stay again.

We just got back last week from 4 nights at the Iberville Suites. The weekday proces were moderate, although weekends rose a bit. The hotel was in a perfect location (actually adjacent to the Maison Orleans) on Iberville, a block & a half off of Bourbon. It is far enough to be quiet, but close enough to stagger back to late at night.

They give a nice complimentary breakfast, and the hotel is very posh. The only down point was an elevator that you need to take to get to the second floor lobby, as well as to the other elevators that take you to the room. Otherwise, I would recommend this hotel.

I would only caution that if you are looking at some of the smaller hotels (Place d'Armes was one of the ones I called first), they do not always have non-smoking rooms. This was a big factor in my decision to go with a major chain hotel, but if it isn't as a big a deal for you, then just enjoy!

Bennie- Thanks for the nice write-up on the Omni Royal Orleans hotel. I was glad to hear you liked it. My bid was just accepted at this hotel for a stay in May for $65 per night. I feel pretty lucky to get such a nice room at that great rate.

Abud - that is a great rate. You won't be disappointed. I'm sure you'll get one of the small rooms too but they are pretty and the beds are comfy. The location was perfect for us as we just wanted to explore the FQ and the Omni was pretty centrally located.

I just got back from New Orleans last week. We stayed at the Monteleone. Very lovely old world hotel , not too big, not too small, just right. Helpful staff, too. The only thing I didn't like is you couldn't open the windows in your room and had to rely on AC for any so-called air.

bsp- I got the Omni Royal Orleans for 2 nights in May by bidding through Priceline. My $65 bid was accepted on my first try. I used the site biddingfortravel.com to investigate which hotels are known to participate with Priceline in NO. The 4* hotels they listed were Marriott New Orleans, Wyndham Canal Place and the Omni Royal Orleans. Since any one of those would work for us, location wise, I bid for a 4*. I have been bidding for hotels and rental cars for about a year now and have been very happy so far. We've saved a ton of cash! Good luck!

The Omni uses their smallest rooms for Priceline but if they aren't busy you may luck out and get upgraded to a "deluxe" or larger (still relatively small) room. Ask at check in!
