Fellow Detroiters: Flights to Chicago

I was just checking out flights from Detroit to Chicago and was shocked to see the cheapest flight priced at $116!! I remember when you could get a flight for $50 or less!! Is this too high? Any advice as to how I can get a cheaper flight? I don't fly often, so I don't know the "tricks" if you will! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Did you check Southwest from Midway. They would be your best bet.

I am originally from Detroit and now live in Chicago. Family is back in Detroit so I've taken the route many times in my life. You're right about one thing, you don't fly often! $50 or less roundtrip??? That must have been back in the 70's. I generally pay around $100 RT if I'm lucky, but wouldn't think $116 is too much.

Close to the 70's! I remember ads for $49 flights back in the 80's early 90's. Of course, now that I think about it, that might have been one way!

Southwest has fun fares of $49 1 way on their websites. That's $98 roundtrip. I don't think you'll find much cheaper than that and it's already low.

The $49 one way prices on Southwest do not include taxes and fees -- the price on SW is the same as NW - about $111 roundtrip.

Ok, so I didn't add in the few extra bucks for taxes. Southwest is still your best best and Midway Airport is easy.

There's always the train, about 5.5 hours, but it lets you off right in the downtown. It costs $55 RT, with discounts for AAA and seniors.
