What do you mean by taking forever? And are you talking now - midsummer - when the whole area is mobbed?

You might face a lot of traffic from Riverhead to EH. I would take the Shelter island ferries. That is what most people who live near Orient Point would probably do as well, unless they wanted to avoid the ferry fares.

At least it will not be a weekend!

In my experience, waiting for the ferry in Greenport to SI always takes the longest, but I doubt you'll save much if any time by driving all around to Riverhead avoiding the ferries. At this time of year, either is going to take time. By taking the ferries, you can avoid 27 altogether by using rte 114 from Sag Harbor to East Hampton.

thank you very much for your input. I am trying to find the fastest route. The last time I took the trip was years ago and it took two hours to go from orient point to east hampton by the full "ferry"/shelter island route. I grew up on the Island and remember how horrible the traffic is... now I deal with it in Boston. I did make a conscious decision to go mid week. I am visiting my aunt and uncle who I haven't seen in years and want to maximize my time with them and not in the car. If anyone has any other recommendations ... and if 2 hours is a normal commute from orient pt vis shelter harbor, please let me know so I will be mentally prepared and I can let my relatives know my general time of arrival.

I would take the ferry. From Orient Point to Riverhead will take about 50 minutes (I drive this route very often in summer, most recently a few days ago) and from there it can easily be more than an hour to EH. Although the ferries will cost you more, and it is impossible to predict things like traffic and ferry lines, I think that you have a better chance of making it in under two hours with the route via Shelter Island. Having said that, I would plan on two hours and hope to catch a break.
