Jill, you should start using maps.google.com and hopstop.com for these trips. On google maps, after you've typed the route and gotten a driving map, click on the train icon at the top for public transport instructions. You can also pick a specific date and time since subways often have service changes on weekends. The basic idea is you'll be taking a NYC subway (or 2) to a PATH station. PATH is like a subway that connects NYC and NJ but it's a different system so requires different payment.

The fastest and easiest way for this particular trip is to order a car service but that will be quite pricey.

Jill,

As i mentioned in your other question, walk to Lexington Avenue and then walk up to 86th Street for the subway.

In this instance take any downtown train 4, 5 or 6 to 59th Street. At the back of the platform (4, 5 downstairs, 6 upstairs) follow the signs to the N, Q and R trains. Take any downtown train (N, Q or R) to 34th Street. At 34th Street use the stairs at the front of the platform, exit thru the turnstiles and make a right and then another right down the stiars to the PATH station. Take a Hoboken bound PATH train (on track 3) to Hoboken (the last stop). At Hoboken, exit to the street and walk in a direction away from the terminal (it is a rail and ferry terminal at street level) for about 1 block to Washington Street. Make a right on Washington St and walk about a block. You'll see Carlo's on the right side of the street.

The subway fare is $2.50 one way (if you buy a single fare ticket from the MetroCard Vending Machine) or $2.25 if you buy a MetroCard for $4.50 or more from the machine or the booth.

The PATH fare is $1.75 one way. You can purchase a round trip card ($3.50) from one of the vending machines or add $3.50 to the MetroCard you bought for use on the subway. Note: Even though PATH accepts the regular MetroCard (not the unlimited version) there are no free transfers between the 2 systems.

Enjoy.
