Family visit to Michigan in October?
We'd like to visit the shores of Michigan in October as we'll be passing through that area about mid-October. We know nothing about this area...what's not to miss? Is it too late in the year? We have youngish kids, like to hike, like the beach (I know the water will be cold). While I know no one can predict the weather, is it likely to be snowy in mid-October?
Any tips on where to start would be appreciated. It's such a huge area.

In mid October, the Fall colors in the UP will have probaby passed there prime, but particularly when you are close to the shore, they should be lovely in the northern part of the Lower Penninsula.
Yes, there will probably be cold weather, but hitting a daytime high near 70 isn't at all out of the question. In that area, snow flakes will probably have been seen by then, but not snow that acumulates.
You might consider a visit to Mackinac Island. I think that is one of the the best times of year there and hotels are a bargain compared to July and August.

For Holland/Saugatuck/GrandHaven, we always figure October 15 to be peak color.
I don't believe I've ever seen snow there on that date. Could be 75, could be 35.
Traverse City's far enough further north to be past peak that date, and to be at risk for snow.

Jenny - what part "the shores" are you planning on seeing and how long do you plan to be in the area.
We have had some great weather in October, but plan on a light coat and possibly a rain coat.
If you are up north (Traverse City area)you can check out Sleeping Bear Dunes
http://www.nps.gov/slbe/index.htm. For the kids there is a place called Great Wolf Lodge -

No matter what the weather the pool is open - it is a huge waterpark. I have nieces and newphews that have been there and love it.
If you are going to be in the Grand Rapids area, you might want to check out Meijer Gardens - http://meijergardens.org/
they have a great sculpter park and kids area
Hope this helps - Enjoy Michigan.. it is beautiful.
