Family Trip to Moab - Flying into SLC
We are traveling to Moab this month with small children. We will be traveling from Salt Lake City to Moab and then back to Salt Lake City a couple days later. I read some reviews online that Highway 6 is very dangerous. I would like to travel safely and avoid dangerous routes....especially if the safer roads are more scenic. We don't mind driving a while, but would also like suggestions of towns along the way that may be good to stop at for bathroom breaks, restaurants, museums, recreation. TIA!

j4lino,
Just 2 days in Moab will be a VERY short visit. I drive Hwy 6 every time I go to Moab which is yearly (I live in Utah). I is kind of dangerous because part of the way is still one lane in each direction. Over the past years, they have been working to widen it so there are more lanes part of the way.
It's a little curvy and quite steep in places. Combine that with the single lane travel and some people don't pass safely. If you drive cautiously, stay alert, you will be fine.
The alternative is to stay on I-15 south until you reach I-70, then head east. This adds over an hour to the drive but part of it is scenic. Not more scenic than Hwy 6 so it's your call.
Bring wide brimmed hats, sunscreen, UV sunglasses and TONS of water. Have fun!

PS - I usually stop in Spanish Fork before heading up the canyon on Hwy 6, then again in Helper and Green River. This is route NOT the dining greatest area of the world so I have no restaurant recs for you. I take snacks in the car....
I believe Helper has some good places, but Stanonhyde knows about those! Hopefully she will answer your question, but if not, click on her name and look at some of her trip reports. She travels with her kids!

Stop at a Whole Foods or other grocery store/deli and just picnic. With small Children I wouldn't miss a stop for a couple of hours at Goblin Valley State Park. Your children will probably find it to be the highlight of the trip.

Highway 6 is a dangerous road--lots of car accidents. BUT that doesn't stop me from driving it with my kids at least once a year. It has gotten much better and it is much safer in the summer vs. winter. It is much more scenic than taking I-15 to I-70.
Stop in Price--it is the half way point. Let the kids run around the dinosaur museum there--it is quite good. There are some diners there, I just usually eat fast food and keep moving. We stopped once at the Helper railroad museum, not as good as the dinosaurs. On the way back, you can stop in Wellsville (tiny town south of Pricer) and let the kids run around the playground that is there by the side of the road. We only stop once-so its 2 hours in the car, a break, then another 2 hours. There is NOTHING to stop and see along the I-15 to I-70 route. Green River has some sort of museum, but by then you are almost to Moab.
If you search my user name, there should be a review or 2 of trips to Moab with kids.

I went to Arches several years ago. I drove from SLC to Moab and swung across southern Utah and then back up to SLC from Bryce Canyon.
I much preferred this drive to LAS.
I don't remember anything coming from SLC that I would consider a problem. "And I'm the one who thinks the yellow line is meant to straddle." Ha!!!

I second the Dinosaur museum in Price. Take the first exit and it will be on your right. Fun for kids.
The road itself has certainly improved over the years. Stay on your side of the line, drive the speed limit, and watch out for people coming the other direction who aren't doing the same. We drive it at least several times a year or more. I recommend it over the longer freeway route.
