We are looking for a good place/resort to have a family reunion in Central Texas. Austin, Houston, Dallas...anywhere near any of those. We went to Tapatio Spring this year and it was atrocious!!! We were looking at White Bluff Resort in Lake Whitney but hear there a big fire yesterday. We need a place that has reasonable prices but any suggestions would be fab!

We spent a weekend at Chain O Lakes and really liked it. Our package was kind of pricey, but they have other packages available. They have cute cabins right on the water - ours had a nice porch and a porch swing. We saw lots of wildlife, including a racoon and alligators. They have horseback riding, canoeing, a gourmetish restaurant on site, horsedrawn carriages, etc. One night we all made s'mores around the campfire - it was fun! They were working on building a new pool, and it looked like it would be nice.

We got the lover's package, and it included a nice dinner at the restaurant, a candlelit dinner delivered to our cabin, and a nice picnic that they packed for us to enjoy on the grounds. I think it would be a fun spot for a reunion.

I'm planning a reunion trip for my high school and college girlfriends to the Hyatt Hill Country Resort in San Antonio - looks like a great place with a river for innertubing that runs around the property and also a nice spa. Not sure what your budget is, but you could look into these. The Riverwalk is a fun spot to go to dinner. There's also the Alamo and Sea World.

We also really like the Gruene Apple Bed and Breakfast in Gruene - charming place in a charming little town where you can eat on the river at the Grist Mill, shop the antique stores, go tubing on the Guadalupe, and go to the Schlitterbahn.

A friend of ours had a family reunion at a dude ranch in Bandera. Said it was really great. Might look into that.

In addition to the above suggestions, also check out the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort near Bastrop. Haven't been there (and haven't checked prices) but have read some really good reviews. Very easy to get to from Austin's airport.

La Cantera is another spot in San Antonio - haven't stayed there myself, but might be worth looking into.

We recently toured Hyatt Lost Pines and it is indeed a beautiful place. Prices run about $250/night but if you get enough participants, you could ask for a group discount.

What was the problem with Tapitio Springs? . . we were there last year and it was fine.

Pop over to tripadvisor.com and look at the reviews for Tapatio - they are for the most part awful.

Also look into Canyon of the Eagles resort on Lake Buchanan west of Austin. The resort has a private beach and multiple fishing piers along three miles of lakefront, canoe/kayak/sail/paddleboat rentals, an outdoor amphitheater, a 64-unit lodge with very nice hill country-style rooms, a swimming pool, restaurant with stunning views of the lake, meeting rooms, guided nature programs, 14 miles of hiking trails, a lights-out observatory area for stargazing, and the Vanishing Texas River Cruise.

Tapatio Springs was horrible! They promised to put us ll in one building and we were not, the rooms were darkand musty and the fence outside was falling down, the pool is small with very little shade, the food was terrible and very overpriced, there was really no place for us all to sit so we often were standing together outsdie of our rooms in the center area, the people at the desk were not helpful at all, there were crickets everywhere and I even woke to find a dead one under my bed pillow! Gross!!! The tennis courts were in very bad condition - it was an overall mess. Gorgeous area of Texas - but Tapatio Springs was a nightmare.

Gosh . . our experience certainly was different from that . . but it has been almost two years. We spent the daylight hours on the Golf Course and the evening at Arky Blue's in Bandera.
